Uneven pre-brew after valve wear. When a valve sticks, the soft-infusion stage wets the puck unevenly and shots vary from group to group. We clean or replace the valve and check each group's pre-brew once the work is done.
Shots that differ from group to group. Different flow or temperature between groups points at a scaled solenoid, a clogged screen or a dose that has drifted. We clean each group, replace worn parts and check that every group pulls the way it should. Each group is then timed against the others with the same dose.
Boiler descale on EBMUD water. Emeryville is on EBMUD water, soft to moderate, so scale builds slowly, but a high-volume boiler still collects it. We descale the boiler and check the element and level probe while it is open. The inlet filtration gets a fresh cartridge before the machine goes back.
