Crathco in Portola Valley

Crathco commercial service.

Portola Valley has almost no commercial inventory beyond its small town center, so the Crathco machines I service here all sit on private property: a frozen drink machine in a rec barn on a ranch property toward Skyline, a Mini-Pro unit next to a game room in one of the mid-century modern homes near Ladera, a D series bowl brought out for a big backyard event on a wooded acreage lot.

Most commercial refrigeration outfits pass on a home address entirely, which leaves an owner out here with a broken machine and no one willing to make the drive. We take these calls the way we take any other: $75 for the diagnostic, credited if you move ahead with the repair, a written quote before we start, a one year warranty on the work, and I personally handle the sealed system under EPA 608 Universal certification.

This is a wildfire-aware community, and a machine that has ridden out a few PG&E shutoffs during fire season sometimes shows that wear before anything else does. I show up alone in one van, work through the machine, and leave the space the way I found it.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Seized auger in a rec barn machine idle since last summer. Out on a ranch property toward Skyline, a machine kept in the rec barn might run once a summer, and that is enough idle time for leftover mix to varnish the auger solid against the cylinder. I break it loose, inspect the shaft seal and replace it if it has gone stiff, sanitize the full product path, and confirm a clean pulldown before handing it back.
  • Start relay failing after PSPS power cycling. A machine that rides out a multi-day shutoff and restart during fire season puts real wear on its start relay and capacitor, more than steady daily use would. The next time someone needs it for a party, the compressor clicks, hums for a second, and gives up instead of catching. I test and replace the start components, then verify the compressor windings came through the outages fine.
  • Perished seals on a game room machine near Ladera. A Mini-Pro or D series unit in a mid-century home's game room might see light use, but the seals inside do not know that, they degrade on a timeline that has nothing to do with how often the machine runs. Cracked gaskets on something serving your family are a cleanliness concern before they are ever a leak concern, so when I open one of these up, I put in a complete new seal set rather than chase the single one that is visibly bad.

FAQ

Crathco in Portola Valley questions, answered.

  • How long is the trip from San Ramon to Portola Valley?
Around 50 to 60 minutes, taking 680 south and then 92 or 280. We schedule Portola Valley on our Peninsula day with Hillsborough, and we send a written arrival time ahead of the visit.
  • Can you come service the machine before an event without the owner home?
Yes, that is normal out here. Give us instructions for getting onto the property, whether that is a gate code, a lockbox, or a call ahead to whoever is managing the house, and we will handle the rest, quote in writing, photos when it is done.
  • Is it worth fixing a residential frozen drink machine instead of buying new?
In most cases, yes, the cabinet on one of these outlasts almost anything else in the house. The real question is the compressor and the sealed system behind it. Test those out healthy and the rest, seals, belts, drive parts, is inexpensive. Test them out bad and I will say so up front rather than let you spend money chasing a machine that is done.
