Problem: A facilities contractor that services Habit Burger locations called us about a Crathco cold beverage dispenser at the Millbrae restaurant. The twin-tank unit, running Strawberry and Cucumber Limeade, had stopped cooling and the product was going warm during service. On a busy lunch line a warm dispenser means dumped product and lost sales by the hour.
Diagnostics: We started with our $75 diagnostic, which we waive if you go ahead with a repair. The dispenser is an Electrolux Professional unit, Model SR-25-16-290, built around an R290 sealed system. R290 is propane, so it is efficient but flammable and has to be handled by someone set up for it. We tested the refrigeration side and traced the fault to the compressor itself, a GMCC EA59HMB-U that had failed and was no longer pulling the system down. What stood out is that this exact compressor has been turning up in a known manufacturer bad-batch, a run of units where the compressor fails early.
Solution: Because the compressor matched that bad-batch, the honest answer was not to sell the client a compressor swap. We confirmed the unit was still covered under factory warranty, documented the failure, and the client checked with the manufacturer, who confirmed the bad batch and agreed to replace the compressor under warranty at no cost. Our part here was the diagnosis and pointing them to coverage they already had.
Result: The client gets the compressor replaced by the manufacturer under warranty instead of paying out of pocket, and they know exactly what failed and why. We would rather give a straight diagnosis, even when it means we do not do the repair, than bill for work a warranty should cover. Sealed-system and refrigerant work we do handle is licensed under CSLB #1136642.
