Beverage-Air in Portola Valley

Beverage-Air commercial service.

Portola Valley has almost no commercial inventory outside its small town center, so the Beverage-Air units we work on sit inside homes off Alpine Road and Portola Road, in the mid-century modern kitchens near Ladera and in the larger custom houses spread across wooded acreage toward Skyline. Reach-ins in the main kitchen, wet bar undercounters, and a back-bar cooler in a media room are the usual finds.

Two things drive most of the calls I get out here. First, built-in units recessed into a mid-century cabinet run often get less airflow than the compressor wants, so the fan motor runs hot and fails early. Second, this is a wildfire-aware community with regular PG&E public safety power shutoffs, and a compressor cycling on and off generator or battery backup power takes a different kind of abuse than steady utility power. I check both the airflow and the electrical history before I settle on a diagnosis.

This is commercial-grade refrigeration work, so it goes through our Bay Area Refrigeration Service division. EPA Section 608 Universal certification and CSLB #1136642 apply, the quote is written before anything starts, the repair carries a one year warranty, and we schedule seven days a week.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Fan motor strain in mid-century cabinet built-ins. The clean cabinet lines in a Ladera-adjacent mid-century kitchen often mean a tight enclosure around the cooler with little room for the condenser to breathe. The fan motor runs hotter than it should for years, then fails, usually noticed as a wet bar that has gone warm. We replace the motor, clean the coil, and flag the enclosure if it needs more clearance.
  • Compressor short-cycling after a power safety shutoff. When the power goes out during a PG&E public safety shutoff and the house switches to generator or battery backup, a Beverage-Air compressor can see a rough transition that a steady utility feed never delivers. The start relay or capacitor takes the hit over repeated outages, and the unit starts short-cycling or stops holding temperature. We test the start components under the actual backup power source, not just on shop power, and replace what the transition is wearing out.
  • Control board and probe failures on back-bar coolers. A media room back-bar cooler on a failing control board or a drifting temperature probe can run cold enough overnight to freeze bottles it should only be chilling. I test the control circuit, replace the failed part, and run the unit through a full cycle before I leave to confirm it holds a stable setpoint.

FAQ

Beverage-Air in Portola Valley questions, answered.

  • How long does it take you to get to Portola Valley from San Ramon?
Plan on 50 to 60 minutes down 680 and across on 92 or 280. We run Portola Valley on the same Peninsula day as Hillsborough, and you get a written arrival time rather than a loose morning-or-afternoon guess.
  • We run on well water and septic out here. Does that affect the refrigeration unit itself?
Not directly, a Beverage-Air cooler does not touch your water or septic system. Where it matters is access. Long driveways and unmarked turnoffs on the outer roads are common, so tell us the address details and any gate information ahead of time and we will plan the visit around it.
  • Our unit runs on generator power during outages. Should we mention that when we call?
Yes, tell us that upfront. If the unit is short-cycling or losing temperature after a public safety power shutoff, we test the start components under your actual backup power setup, not just on a clean shop circuit, since that is usually where the real wear is happening.
