Those two duty cycles fail differently. The village machines wear out augers and seals from steady use. The estate machines suffer from sitting, dried product in the hoppers, seals that hardened over a quiet winter, and refrigeration that was never load-tested after the remodel because the installer treated it like a refrigerator instead of a freezer under agitation. I have opened up more than one lightly used Ultra in a Saratoga home that had a factory-fresh compressor and a completely fossilized auger seal.

- Hardened seals on low-use machines. An Ultra that runs a few days a month dries out. The auger seal and hopper gaskets harden, and the first long run of the season pushes product past them. - Refrigeration undersized by the install environment. Built-in installations in remodeled kitchens often box the machine into cabinetry with no airflow to the condenser. The Ultra then runs long cycles, product stays slushy, and the compressor cooks itself over a couple of years. I correct the airflow path, service the sealed system where needed under my EPA 608 Universal certification, and tell you honestly if the enclosure has to change.
- Control board and thermistor drift on the Ultra-2. Older Ultra-2 boards in the village cafes develop thermistor drift, so the machine thinks the product is colder than it is and stops the refrigeration cycle early. The drink pours soft even though everything sounds normal. I verify the sensors against a calibrated thermometer and replace the thermistor or board with the numbers written down, so you can see what changed.

Saratoga sits on my South Bay loop with Los Gatos, Los Altos Hills, and Palo Alto, so I usually pair it with another call in that corridor.
