Common issues we see
What breaks. What we fix.
Bunn builds commercial beverage equipment, and their frozen-drink line shows up in convenience stores, theaters, and quick-serve kitchens across the Bay Area. Most of what we see on the bench are the Ultra-2 and Ultra-NX frozen and granita dispensers, plus the JDF juice and drink units. These run hard, often all day, and the failures follow a predictable pattern.
Refrigeration faults top the list. A barrel that will not freeze down, or product that comes out soft and runny, usually points at a sealed-system problem or a tired compressor. We diagnose the sealed system, check the charge, and handle compressor replacement when it comes to that. Refrigerant work is licensed under CSLB #1136642 and done to EPA spec, not guessed at.
The mechanical wear shows up next. Auger and spinner gear motors grind down over time, and a unit that knocks, stalls, or stops turning the product is almost always a worn gear motor or a failing bearing. Barrel and cylinder seals and gaskets dry out and leak, which lets product weep behind the front and kills the freeze. We rebuild the seal kits and replace the drive components rather than throwing parts at it.
On the control side, mix-low sensors get fouled or drift and start throwing false low-mix alarms, and control boards fail outright. We test the sensor circuit and the board before condemning either one, so you are not paying for a board when a ten-dollar sensor is the real fault.
Almost always worth repairing
Bunn frozen-drink units are worth fixing. Parts support is good, the machines are built to be serviced, and a repair on a gear motor, seal kit, or board lands far below the cost of a new dispenser. For a commercial operator, the math is simple: a few hundred in parts and labor against a unit that earns money every hour it runs.
The only time we push toward replacement is a unit with a dead compressor stacked on top of a failed board and worn-out mechanicals all at once. Short of that, repair wins. We charge a flat $75 diagnostic, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and you get a written quote before any work starts. No surprise charges, no parts ordered until you sign off.
