- Condenser coils corroding faster from salt air. A Bunn condenser near the harbor or right on Main Street picks up salt film that eats through the fin coating well ahead of schedule compared to an inland unit. Airflow drops, head pressure climbs, and the barrel runs soft. I clean these coils more aggressively on Coastside calls and will tell you honestly when a coil is too far gone to keep cleaning.
- Electrical contacts and sensor connections corroding intermittently. Salt air works into places you cannot easily see, including control board terminals and mix-low sensor connections, and the failure shows up as intermittent, fine one day and faulted the next. I check and clean those contacts on Coastside units instead of only chasing the part that is acting up today.
- Barrel seals and gear motors under seasonal tourist-volume swings. Summer weekends bring a spike in foot traffic to Main Street and the harbor that these machines do not see the rest of the year, and that swing from light use to heavy use is hard on barrel seals and gear motors alike. I check both when a unit that ran fine all spring suddenly starts leaking or stalling in July.

Half Moon Bay is our anchor for the whole Coastside, and that includes Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada up Highway 1. Our Peninsula-based technician runs this coast regularly, it's not a special trip out. -
Does the salt air really shorten how long a frozen drink machine lasts?
It changes what fails first. Salt air speeds up coil and electrical corrosion specifically, so a Coastside unit can need coil cleaning and contact checks on a tighter schedule than the same machine would need inland. -
How does response time work all the way out here?
We have a technician living on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, so a Half Moon Bay call is not a truck crossing the whole bay first. I won't promise a number of minutes since 92 and Highway 1 traffic varies, but the technician covering this coast already lives close to it.
