Sharp in Vallejo

Sharp commercial service.

Vallejo sits on San Pablo Bay, and the bay keeps its weather mild. A Sharp heavy-duty microwave cares less about the weather outside than about what happens in the kitchen: the circuit it is plugged into, the door that gets opened and shut over and over through a shift, and the grease its cooling fan drags through the cabinet. Those explain most Sharp failures, whether the unit works in a downtown kitchen or in one of the redeveloped buildings on Mare Island.

Our technician for Vallejo works out of Benicia, the next town east along the strait. We carry common parts for the R-CD, R-22, R-24 and R-25 lines and order the rest to the exact model. You pay a $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair, and see a written quote before any part goes in. CSLB #1136642.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Line fuse that blows again after replacement. A Sharp line fuse rarely fails on its own. It opens because something behind it shorted: a door monitor switch, a high-voltage diode, the capacitor, or a magnetron gone to ground. We unplug the unit, discharge the capacitor and trace that cause before fitting a new fuse. Dropping in a fuse without the trace only buys one more pop.
  • No heat while the fan and light still run. The display counts down, the fan hums and the food comes out cold. We test the high-voltage side in order: magnetron, diode, capacitor, transformer. Each part has its own reading, so the one we replace is the one that failed, matched to what Sharp specifies for that model. On the twin-magnetron R-CD units, one tube can fail and leave the unit heating at half strength.
  • Cooling fan and intake clogged with grease. The cooling fan pulls room air across the magnetron and out of the cabinet. Near a fryer or griddle that air carries grease, and the intake and fan blades load up. The magnetron runs hot, a thermal cutout opens and the unit stops mid-cycle. We clean the air path, test the fan motor and run a long cycle before we leave.

FAQ

Sharp in Vallejo questions, answered.

  • Our Sharp has blown its fuse twice this month. Is it the building wiring or the microwave?
More often the microwave. The monitor switch is built to blow the fuse when the door switches fail to open in the right order, so a latch or switch that has slipped out of adjustment will keep taking fuses. We check the switch timing and the latch first. If the unit tests clean, we look at the outlet and the circuit it shares.
  • Is a ten-year-old R-24 worth fixing, or should we buy new?
In most cases, fix it. The cabinet, chassis and transformer on a heavy-duty Sharp last for years, and a magnetron, diode or switch set costs a fraction of a new unit. If the quote ever gets close to replacement, we say so in writing and you decide.
  • Can we keep using the microwave while a part is on order?
Not while it's faulty. Sharp's manual says not to run a microwave that isn't working properly, and a tired stirrer motor counts: longer cook times won't fix the cold spots. A fault in the door switches or the high-voltage side is the clearest case. We tag that unit out of service, because those circuits keep microwave energy inside the cabinet. Some Sharp commercial models can run on one magnetron after a magnetron error, but only as that model's manual describes.
