Custom homes on wooded acreage and the mid-century modern remodels in the Ladera-adjacent pockets tend to put a Sharp microwave drawer, the 24-inch SMD2470AS or the 30-inch SMD3070AS, into a remodeled island, and a ranch property toward Skyline sometimes adds a second unit in a caretaker's kitchen or detached guest space.

A failed drawer set into custom cabinetry is a different job than a countertop swap, especially in a mid-century kitchen where the cabinet run was built around the appliance. The unit has to come out clean, get diagnosed properly, and go back in square without marking the panels. The plan goes on paper as a written quote before I ever pick up a screwdriver.

What we close on the truck.

  • Drawer stops mid-travel and beeps. A row of position switches tracks the drawer along its travel on the SMD series, and it only takes one going intermittent to make the controller stop the drawer halfway and alarm. Most owners jump straight to a dead motor. I check the switch and the rail for debris first, because that is the cheaper fix and it is right more often than not.
  • Unit heats poorly after years inside cabinetry. A remodel that shaves down ventilation clearance to keep the cabinet face flush ends up cooking the electronics behind it over years, and the magnetron loses output well ahead of schedule. I measure actual output, swap the tube where it has degraded, and fix the venting gap so the next one is not starting the same clock.
  • Child lock and control lockouts that will not clear. Steam drifting up from a nearby cooktop finds its way into the control head over time, and moisture there triggers phantom key presses that the controller reads as a lockout condition. Resetting it buys a few days at most. The fix that holds is a new touch panel assembly with the edge properly sealed against that steam.

    Figure 50 to 60 minutes down 680 south and across on 92 or 280, since Portola Valley rides our Peninsula route alongside Hillsborough. You get a written arrival time ahead of the visit, and Saturday or Sunday slots are available since we work all seven days.
  • Can you match the service to a property caretaker's schedule?
    That works fine. We deal directly with whoever manages the property day to day, show up inside the window we agreed on, and leave the written quote with them on site. The owner can sign off by phone or email, and we come back to do the work once approved.
  • My drawer model is discontinued. Can you even get parts for it?
    Sharp keeps the SMD line well stocked on the parts that actually fail, switches, touch panels, motors, magnetrons, going back a good number of years. On the rare occasion a part is truly gone, I tell you at the diagnostic visit and quote a replacement install, which carries our own 10-year parts and labor warranty.
