It announces itself with clicking under load before it quits entirely. Replace it at the clicking stage and you skip the emergency, which is exactly what I tell Los Altos owners.
Fan motor failure overheating the compressor. The condenser fan on these units runs constantly, and its sleeve bearing dries out. Once the fan slows, the compressor trips on overload during the warm part of the day and the slush softens. I fit a new fan motor and clean the coil while the panel is off.
Leaking rear seal on lightly used home units. Home machines in Los Altos often sit for months with a trace of old mix on the shaft, and the seal fails at the next use. You find syrup pooled behind the bowl. New seal, cleaned shaft, and a quick storage lesson, and the machine is good for years.
