I test the pump and the Navien's recirculation programming and set it to match how far the water actually has to travel.
- Ignition faults from a weak flame sensing rod. After a few years the flame sensing rod picks up a light coating and the signal gets weak enough that the Navien drops out mid-cycle, especially under a longer draw like a shower running alongside a dishwasher. I clean or replace the rod and confirm the flame signal holds steady under load, rather than swapping the whole gas valve assembly.
- Inlet filter clogging from street and service-line sediment. A number of these older South San Francisco homes have had work done on the street or the service line over the years, and that stirs up sediment that collects in the Navien's inlet filter screen. Flow drops and the unit can throw a low-flow error. I pull and clean the screen as part of the visit.
