Navien in Pinole

Navien heating and cooling in Pinole.

Much of Pinole was built between the 1940s and the 1960s, and the original gas piping in those houses was sized for a tank water heater, a furnace and a range. A Navien NPE that replaces the tank can draw several times more gas at full fire than the tank it replaced. When the pipe cannot carry that, the burner starves and the unit locks out, often only when a shower and a dryer run at the same time.

Venting and condensate are the other two checks. A condensing Navien vents through plastic pipe with set clearances, and its condensate needs a drain. In an older house that drain may not exist where the heater sits. EBMUD water is soft to moderate, so scale is a slower concern here than supply and installation details. Pinole calls go to our technician based in Benicia. Our $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair once you approve the written quote.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Burner starving on an old gas line. When other gas appliances run, pressure at the Navien drops and the unit throws an ignition or flame code. We measure inlet pressure at full fire with everything else running, then tell you whether the line needs upsizing or a separate run.
  • Condensate with nowhere to drain. A Navien in a garage or a closet far from a drain needs a neutralizer and sometimes a condensate pump. A pump that fails or a line clogged with sludge shuts the heater down. We clean or replace the pump and neutralizer and fix the route.
  • Hot water turning cold between uses. A short burst of cold between two hot draws comes from the unit shutting down and relighting. Recirculation settings and minimum flow both affect it. We check the flow sensor, adjust the settings, and explain what the unit can and cannot do.

FAQ

Navien in Pinole questions, answered.

  • We want to swap the old tank in our Pinole Valley garage for a Navien. What changes besides the heater?
The gas line, the vent and the condensate drain. The gas pipe often needs upsizing, the old metal flue is replaced by the vent Navien specifies, and a drain with a neutralizer goes in. We quote all of it together so nothing is left out.
  • Why does our Navien throw a code only when the dryer and the furnace are running too?
That points to the gas supply. Everything shares one meter and one set of pipes, and the Navien is the biggest draw. We measure pressure with all of them running and show you the numbers.
  • Does EBMUD water scale up a Navien in Pinole?
Slowly. EBMUD water is soft to moderate, so scale takes longer to build than in towns on harder water. A flush every year or two, plus a clean inlet filter, keeps the exchanger in good shape.
