Navien in Berkeley
Navien heating and cooling in Berkeley.
Berkeley splits into the hills and the flats, and the water heaters reflect it. Up in the hills you get older brown-shingle and Craftsman homes on steep lots, often with the tankless unit mounted outside on a wall facing weather. Down in the flats, the bungalows and student rentals near campus have units squeezed into basements and back porches with venting that barely meets code.
Navien condensing units do well in Berkeley's mild bay climate, but the install details are where the older homes get into trouble. Steep hill lots make venting runs awkward, and many flatland conversions left the original undersized gas line in place. The efficiency a Navien is rated for assumes the gas, venting, and condensate are all correct.
We service these through our HVAC division, Bay Area HVAC Service. I am EPA Section 608 Universal certified, we carry CSLB #1136642, the $75 diagnostic is waived with the repair, every job gets a written quote, and we are available 7 days a week.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Frozen or blocked outdoor units in the hills. Hill homes often have the Navien mounted outside, exposed to fog and the occasional cold snap. The condensate line or the vent freezes or fouls and the unit faults out. I clear the line, add freeze protection where the unit lacks it, and check the exterior termination for moss and debris common in the wooded hill lots.
- Undersized gas line on flatland conversions. A lot of Berkeley flats converted an old tank to tankless and reused the half-inch gas line. The Navien starves for gas under full fire and throws an ignition or flame-loss fault. I measure the gas pressure under load and upsize the line where the unit cannot get the BTU it needs.
- Scale buildup with no service valves. Many basement installs in the flats have no isolation valves, so the unit was never flushed and the heat exchanger scaled. Output drops and the unit can fault. I descale and add service valves so it can actually be maintained going forward.

FAQ
Navien in Berkeley questions, answered.
-
How do you get to Berkeley from San Ramon, and is it a long trip
We come over through the Caldecott corridor and usually pair Berkeley with its neighbors Oakland, Piedmont, or Orinda to make the run efficient. It is a regular route for us and we give you a real arrival window. -
My Navien is mounted outside on a hill lot. Is that a problem
Outdoor mounting is fine for the Berkeley climate if the freeze protection works and the venting stays clear. The fog and tree debris up in the hills foul terminations over time, so I check those and the condensate line at every visit. -
I rent out a flat near campus with an old tankless. Can you service it
Yes. We service plenty of Berkeley rentals. The common issue is a reused undersized gas line from the old tank, which I can verify and correct. You get a written quote you can keep for your records.
