Zephyr in San Bruno
Zephyr in San Bruno kitchens.
San Bruno climbs the hill fast on its western side, Rollingwood, Crestmoor, and Mills Park, and those streets catch the wind that comes off San Bruno Mountain in a way the flatter blocks near El Camino do not. On an external blower mounted through a wall or up on the roof, that wind loading is real. Mounting brackets work loose over the years and the housing starts to rattle before anything inside the blower has actually failed.
Closer to the Tanforan corridor and the newer housing built up around the BART station, the kitchens run younger, and the Zephyr hoods in them lean toward touch-control models rather than the older mechanical switches. Either way, the call I get most in San Bruno is a hood that has gotten louder, and I check the mounting, the blower, and the control board in that order before I say what is actually wrong.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Loose or wind-worked blower mounting. Exterior blowers on the Rollingwood and Crestmoor hillside catch enough wind over the years that the mounting bracket works loose, and the housing starts to rattle or hum before a bearing ever fails. I check the mount before I touch the motor.
- Blower motor bearing wear. Once the mounting is ruled out, worn bearings are the next most common cause of a loud hood with weak pull. Motor tested apart from the speed-control board before I quote a part.
- Capacitive touch control unresponsive. Grease film and steam exposure over time cause the glass panel to stop registering taps or to switch on by itself. Board-and-touch-layer testing done separately, model confirmed before I order.

FAQ
Zephyr in San Bruno questions, answered.
-
We are right by the airport. Does that affect a Zephyr repair call at all?
Not for the repair itself, no. What does affect these calls is the wind off San Bruno Mountain on the hillside streets, which works the mounting on an exterior blower loose over time. That is a San Bruno thing I check for, not an SFO thing. -
Do you actually service San Bruno regularly, or just pass through on the way to somewhere else?
It is a regular stop, not a special trip. San Mateo County is where my Peninsula technician is based, and San Bruno groups with South San Francisco, Millbrae, and Pacifica on those same route days. -
My hood is getting louder every month. Is that worth calling about now or waiting?
Call now. A loud hood is almost always a mechanical problem getting worse, whether it is a loose mount, worn bearings, or a duct issue, and none of those improve on their own. Catching it early is a smaller repair.
