East Palo Alto is mostly dense rental housing and working families, not the remodel money that buys a full island hood setup. The Zephyr units I run into here are under-cabinet and wall-mount inserts, in the older apartment buildings and in the newer condo towers going up around University Circle.

The failure I see most in the older buildings is a blower fan wheel packed with grease, years of cooking without the filter ever coming out for a real clean. That buildup makes the motor work harder, it overheats, and the thermal cutout trips and shuts the hood down. In the newer University Circle units it is usually a control panel or a single LED that burned out, simpler fixes both times.

The diagnostic is $99, waived if you have us do the repair, and I write the quote with the part number before ordering anything.

What we close on the truck.

Grease-packed blower wheel tripping thermal cutout. Years without a real filter clean leave the fan wheel coated. The motor works harder, overheats, and the built-in thermal cutout shuts the hood off. Cleaning the wheel sometimes fixes it without a new motor.
Push-button and touch panel failure on apartment units. Older wall-mount and under-cabinet Zephyr hoods in the rental stock lose a speed setting or the whole panel goes dead. Board work, not a full replacement, in most cases.
Single LED bulb failure on newer condo units. University Circle-area units are newer, so it's usually just the bulb or its driver, not a wiring problem. Cheap fix once I confirm which one it is.
