A Cremina has no reservoir. You fill its boiler through the cap on top, so whatever comes out of the tap is what heats, brews and steams. Vallejo's water, drawn from Lake Berryessa and the State Water Project, is on the hard side. Each fill leaves a little more mineral behind, and on a lever machine that has run for decades it gathers where it does the most harm: on the heating element, on the safety valve seat and inside the sight glass.

We collect machines from the Victorian and Craftsman houses downtown, from Glen Cove and from Hiddenbrooke. On our bench we open the boiler, see how much scale is there and test the heating circuit hot. The written quote names the failed part before any repair begins. Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Slow warm-up from a scaled heating element. When a Cremina takes longer each month to come up to pressure, a crust on the element is a likely reason. Scale insulates it, so the element runs hotter to push heat into the water and can trip the thermal protection. We descale the boiler, test the element's resistance and renew it only when the reading says it has failed.
Sight glass clouded or weeping at its seals. Hard water stains the inside of the glass until the level is difficult to read, and the seals at each end harden with heat. A weeping glass leaves white tracks down the case. We clean or replace the glass, fit new seals and check that the level reads true with the boiler hot.
Safety valve that hisses while the boiler heats. The safety valve should stay shut until pressure passes its limit. Scale on the seat can hold it slightly open, so it hisses or spits during warm-up. We clean or replace the valve and check the pressurestat too, because a switch that cuts out late can push pressure up to the release point.
