The Maximatic looks like a Cremina with a pump added, but inside it is a different machine. An electric pump pushes water through a heat exchanger in the boiler, and a three-way valve releases pressure from the group after each shot. When shots slow down, the pump sounds strained or the puck comes out soaked, the fault can sit anywhere along that path.

Benicia's water is moderately hard, and its hardness moves with the mix of State Water Project, Lake Berryessa and Lake Herman supply. That scale settles in the narrow passages of the heat exchanger and on the seat of the three-way valve. We pick the machine up, measure brew pressure on our bench and follow the water path before choosing a part. We service Olympia Express independently and are not an authorized Olympia service.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Maximatic pump that runs loud but moves little water. A worn pump, or a healthy pump fighting a scaled restriction further along, sounds busy and delivers a weak shot. We measure pressure under load at the group before judging the pump itself. Replacing a good pump leaves the real blockage where it was.
Soaked puck and a group that drips after the shot. The three-way valve should vent the group as soon as the pump stops. When scale or a worn seal keeps it from seating, water sits over the coffee and the group keeps dripping. We clean or rebuild the valve and watch it vent cleanly shot after shot.
Steam that fades halfway through a pitcher. On either machine, weak steam can come from a pressurestat set low, a scaled element or a steam valve that is partly blocked. We read boiler pressure on a gauge, look at the element and open the valve before replacing anything.
