AC Repair in Palo Alto

AC Repair in Palo Alto.

Palo Alto holds one of the largest Eichler concentrations anywhere, whole tracts of them in Greenmeadow and Fairmeadow on the 94306 side. Those houses were built with radiant heat in the slab and no ductwork at all, and by now most of the original slabs are dead or dying, the copper buried in concrete that nobody can chase a leak through economically. For cooling, that means there was never central air to begin with, and the retrofit that respects the house is a ductless heat pump, wall-mounted heads that cool without touching the flat roof or the open post-and-beam ceilings.

The rest of the city is conventional. Old Palo Alto and Crescent Park remodels run ducted furnaces and AC, much of it installed during the 2000s remodel wave and now at the age where capacitors, contactors, and slow refrigerant leaks start showing up. Midtown and University South apartments run compact equipment that fails in compact ways, and we service those calls too.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Eichler with no existing cooling. The radiant slab never included AC, and chasing a leak through a dead slab isn't worth it. A ductless heat pump adds cooling without touching the ceilings or the flat roof.
  • Old Palo Alto or Crescent Park condenser, 2000s remodel age. Capacitor, contactor, or a slow refrigerant leak on equipment now 15 to 25 years old. We diagnose to the actual fault before quoting repair or replacement.
  • Midtown or University South apartment unit failure. Compact equipment, compact failures. Same capacitor and contactor checks, sized down for the smaller condenser.
  • Slow refrigerant leak, any Palo Alto neighborhood. We find it with nitrogen and electronic detection and weigh the charge back to the nameplate. We don't top off a leaking system and send another bill in two weeks.

FAQ

AC Repair in Palo Alto questions, answered.

  • My Eichler has no AC at all. What are my options?
Central ducting isn't realistic once the radiant slab is dead, so the retrofit we recommend is a ductless heat pump, heads placed to keep the post-and-beam ceilings clean. It cools the house without touching the roofline the way a full duct system would.
  • Does Palo Alto's own utility change anything about an AC repair or install?
For a straight repair, no. For an install or a heat pump conversion, yes: CPAU runs its own rebate and permit programs separate from PG&E territory next door, and we confirm what's actually available when we write the estimate.
  • What does the AC diagnostic cost?
$99, credited toward the repair, with a written itemized quote before work starts. We're EPA Section 608 Universal certified for any sealed-system work.

Pricing HVAC repair starts with a $99 diagnostic, credited toward the approved repair — that makes the service call $0 with a completed repair. Considering a new HVAC system? The in-home estimate visit is free.
