An outdoor kitchen’s ice maker, opened up for the first time in years
Problem: A Los Altos Hills property has a U-Line undercounter ice maker built into the stone bar of its outdoor kitchen — the U-CLR2160SOD, a model rated for exactly this life outside. The ice had gone downhill: cloudy cubes, batches that never froze solid. When our technician pulled the unit and opened it up, both causes were staring back. The condenser coil was buried under a mat of dust and dried garden leaves, and the water trough had black mold growing in it.
Diagnostics: Those two findings explain the symptoms completely. A smothered condenser can’t shed heat, so the unit loses freezing power and cubes come out soft. A moldy water path means every cube is made from water that’s been sitting on that growth. No electrical or sealed-system faults — this was neglect, not failure.
Solution: Condenser coil cleaned down to bright metal. The entire water side — ice mold, trough, distributor, pump — came apart, got scrubbed and sanitized, then flushed until the water ran completely clean. The unit went back into the cabinetry without a single replacement part.
Result: Full, solid batches of clean ice the same afternoon. The property is looked after by a management company, and this visit is a good picture of what an annual maintenance stop prevents: caught a year earlier, the coil is a twenty-minute cleaning and the mold never appears at all.
