Sub-Zero Built-In Refrigerator Defrost Drain Service

A Los Gatos homeowner called us out for their Sub-Zero built-in column: water and frost were collecting in the fresh-food section, and the drain area behind the rear panel showed the telltale staining of a clogged defrost drain.

Sub-Zero Sub-Zero Built-In Refrigerator Refrigeration repair

Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator defrost drain service in Los Gatos

Problem: The owner of a Sub-Zero built-in column in Los Gatos noticed moisture where it didn’t belong. On a unit like this, water pooling under the crisper area usually points one place: the defrost drain. Sub-Zero columns run a defrost cycle on a schedule, and the meltwater has exactly one way out. When that path clogs, the water stays in the cabinet.

Diagnostics: Our technician emptied the fresh-food section, pulled the drawer racks, and removed the interior rear panel to reach the evaporator compartment. The staining running down from the drain fitting confirmed it: meltwater had been overflowing the drain path instead of leaving the cabinet. The evaporator coil and ice maker wiring checked out; this was a drainage problem, not a sealed-system one.

Solution: We cleared the defrost drain, flushed the line until it ran clean, cleaned up the compartment, and reassembled the panel and racks. Everything went back together the same visit, and the unit stayed with its owner the whole time; built-in Sub-Zero work happens in place, not in a shop.

Result: The column drains the way the factory intended, and the owner isn’t wiping up under the crispers anymore. Catching a clogged drain early matters on these units: the same water that puddles in the cabinet can end up where it damages what a Sub-Zero is built into, custom cabinetry.

If your Sub-Zero is leaving water where it shouldn’t, we service built-in columns across the Bay Area, including Los Gatos. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
