Miele Built-In Refrigerator Defrost Drain Repair

Water pooling at the base of a panel-ready Miele built-in. The defrost drain was blocked, so defrost water backed up instead of draining.

Miele Built-In Refrigerator Model: KF 2982 Vi Refrigeration repair

Miele built-in refrigerator defrost drain repair in Palo Alto

A Palo Alto homeowner called about water showing up at the base of a Miele KF 2982 Vi, the 36-inch fully integrated, panel-ready bottom-freezer. The unit was cooling fine, but water kept collecting where it should not.

Problem: Water was pooling instead of draining. On a bottom-freezer built-in like this, defrost water is supposed to run off the evaporator, down a small channel, and out a drain to the evaporation pan near the compressor. When that drain clogs, the water has nowhere to go, so it backs up, freezes and thaws, and eventually shows up on the floor.

Diagnostics: We pulled the lower rear panel and exposed the evaporator. The coil and the drain trough underneath told the story: the defrost drain was blocked, so meltwater was sitting in the channel instead of running out. Nothing electrical, nothing in the sealed system. A drain, not a part.

Solution: We cleared the blocked drain and the channel it feeds, flushed the line, and confirmed water ran through cleanly. No parts were needed on this one. We reset the panel and checked that the defrost cycle drained the way it should. The $75 diagnostic is waived when you book the repair.

A clogged defrost drain is one of the most common built-in refrigerator calls, and on an integrated Miele it is easy to mistake for something bigger because the water turns up away from the drain itself. It is usually a short visit once the panel is off and the drain is in reach.
