JennAir refrigerator not cooling in Oakland
Problem: The call was a JennAir French door refrigerator in Oakland that wasn’t getting cold enough. The owner had checked a few things before we came: the fans were running and air was moving through the fridge. That helps. It rules out the most common easy answer.
Diagnostics: The rating plate gave the model, JFC2290REP00, charged with R-134a. Then the evaporator cover came off. The evaporator is the coil where the refrigerant pulls heat out of the air the fan pushes across it. On a healthy system that’s been running a while, frost spreads across the coil fairly evenly. This one had a heavy cap of frost on one corner and bare metal everywhere else. When only the first stretch of the coil gets cold, not enough refrigerant is making it through. The fans can run all day, but they’re moving air across a coil that’s mostly warm. A defrost problem looks different: ice over the whole coil, not one corner. This pattern points to the sealed system (the compressor, coils and tubing that carry the refrigerant).
Solution: Sealed system work means opening the refrigerant circuit, fixing the fault and recharging it, so it’s a bigger job than swapping a fan or a sensor. We wrote up an estimate for the sealed system repair and left the decision with the owner.
Result: No repair was done on this visit. The owner has the diagnosis and an estimate for the sealed system work. If your refrigerator is warm but the fans are running, have someone look at the evaporator before you shop for a new one. The frost pattern alone tells you a lot.
