Frigidaire Professional Column: Refrigerant Leak and Evaporator Replacement

A Frigidaire Professional all-refrigerator column in Saratoga, installed next to its matching all-freezer, had stopped holding temperature. The sealed system had lost its R134a charge through a leak.

Frigidaire Built-In All-Refrigerator Column Model: FPRU19F8RF Refrigeration repair

Frigidaire Professional column refrigerator, Saratoga

A Saratoga kitchen runs a pair of Frigidaire Professional columns side by side: an FPRU19F8RF all-refrigerator next to its matching all-freezer, trimmed into the cabinetry as one 64-inch unit. The refrigerator side had stopped holding temperature. The freezer column next to it was fine, which is the first useful clue on a paired install — two separate sealed systems, so a problem on one side stays on that side.

The sealed system had lost its charge. That is not a slow drift you top off and forget. Refrigerant does not get consumed, so a low charge means it left through a hole, and the only honest repair is to find the hole, fix it, and put the system back together properly.

What we found

The leak was in the evaporator. On a column like this the evaporator sits behind the rear panel of the fresh-food compartment, so the interior comes apart to reach it. With the panel off, the coil, the defrost heater and the evap fan are all in front of you.

We replaced the evaporator coil rather than patching it. A pinhole in an aluminum coil rarely comes alone, and a repaired coil on a unit this size is a callback waiting to happen.

The filter drier went with it. That part is not optional on a sealed-system repair: the drier holds the moisture and debris that get into an open system, and reusing a saturated one puts that moisture straight back into the new charge. Any shop that skips the drier to save a few dollars is setting up the next failure.

After the new coil and drier were brazed in, the system was evacuated to pull moisture and air out, then charged with R134a to the plate specification. Gauges stay on through the pulldown so we can see the system actually reach and hold its numbers before we call it done.

Why this repair was worth doing

A Frigidaire Professional column is not a $700 top-freezer. It is a built-in-look, trimmed-in unit that was specified as part of the kitchen, and its twin sits right beside it. Replacing one column means matching a discontinued finish or replacing both, plus cabinetry work. Against that, a sealed-system repair is the sane choice, and it is the kind of work we take on.

The reverse is also true, and we will say it on the phone: on an entry-level Frigidaire top-freezer, the same sealed-system job costs more than the machine is worth. We would tell you to replace it rather than sell you the repair.

What it cost

The visit starts at our $99 diagnostic, and that $99 comes off the price when you go ahead with the repair. Sealed-system work is quoted after the diagnosis, never before — anyone quoting a refrigerant repair over the phone is guessing.

We handle refrigerant under EPA certification #1279674151528, CSLB license #1136642.
