Whirlpool refrigerator ice buildup in Berkeley
Problem: The call came in as a warm fridge in a Berkeley apartment. It’s a Whirlpool top-freezer built in August 2024, so about a year old. The fresh-food section wasn’t staying cold, and the freezer above it had a lot of ice in it.
Diagnostics: A top-freezer like this has one evaporator, behind the back panel of the freezer. A fan pulls air across it and sends it into the freezer and, through a damper, down into the fresh-food section. With the panel off the problem was plain to see: frost across the evaporator fins and a solid layer of ice along the bottom, with more ice blocking the airflow and damper area. A freezer can stay fairly cold in that state while the section below slowly warms up, because the air meant for it has nowhere to go.
Solution: We fully defrosted the freezer and cleared the ice out of the air passages and the damper area. The label on the evaporator cover explains why that takes patience: the unit runs on R-600a, a flammable refrigerant, and Whirlpool warns against using mechanical devices to defrost it. With the ice gone we checked the defrost system and the door seals. Both checked out on the day.
Result: Air has a clear path from the freezer to the fresh-food section again, and we ran the refrigerator before we left. No parts were needed on this visit.
