Perlick ice maker that wouldn’t start, at an outdoor bar in Berkeley
Problem: This Perlick undercounter ice maker is built into an outdoor bar in a Berkeley backyard, next to a glass-door beverage fridge. It had been powering on but not making ice. By the time we got there it wouldn’t start a cycle at all.
Diagnostics: The data plate put it at a Perlick H50IMS-L on R-134a. We started with the supply side: 115 to 120 volts at the unit, so power wasn’t the problem. The main fuse tested good. We checked the ICE/OFF/WASH selector switch in each position, and it did its job. With all of that ruled out, the control compartment came open. The main electronic control board wasn’t sending the operating outputs the machine needs to start a cycle.
Solution: The owner approved the written estimate, and we replaced the main control board together with its wiring harness and connectors. Every connection on the new board was checked and secured before the control compartment went back together.
Result: We ran the whole machine through water fill, a freeze cycle and a harvest, and checked the compressor, the condenser fan and ice production. It’s back to work under the bar. One more thing we flagged: this unit gets a lot of direct sun. Heat around an ice maker pushes operating temperatures up and wears on both the refrigeration side and the electronics, so we suggested more shade and airflow around the cabinet.
