Bertazzoni french door refrigerator freezer not cooling in Pleasant Hill
Problem: A Bertazzoni 36-inch french door refrigerator (model REF36FDBZPNV) in Pleasant Hill had stopped freezing. The ice maker bin was down to a wet film and the freezer drawer was nowhere near cold enough to keep food safe.
Diagnostics: Our technician started with an infrared thermometer: 43 to 46°F depending on where he pointed it. That is refrigerator territory, not the 0°F a freezer should hold. The compressor side of the compartment was clean, but the condenser coil next to it was packed solid, the fins hidden under a grey felt of dust and lint. A blocked condenser cannot get rid of the heat it pulls out of the box, so the system runs hot and the freezer never gets down to temperature.
Solution: He cleaned the condenser coil down to bare fins, vacuumed out the compartment, and left the refrigerator running to pull the freezer back down.
Result: Heat is leaving the coil again and the freezer is pulling down. A coil in this state is the best argument for having the condenser cleaned on a schedule: on french door units it sits at floor level, it catches everything the kitchen air carries, and nobody sees it until the freezer warms up.
