What breaks. What we fix.
Amana sits at the budget end of the Whirlpool family. Same compressors, same dishwasher pumps, same control boards as the parent platform, just with simpler trim and fewer features. That keeps parts inexpensive and most repairs in single-visit territory.
ART and ASI top-freezer refrigerators fail at the door gasket first: it sets a memory shape when the door has been left open in heat, then never seals tight again, and the tell is condensation around the door frame with the compressor running almost nonstop. Defrost-system failures, the heater, the thermostat, or the timer, are the second common call.
Both are worth knowing if you want to troubleshoot yourself, but here is the honest math: Amana’s top-freezer lineup sells new for well under our $1,000 refrigerator threshold, and once a repair runs past roughly $250 in parts and labor, that math stops favoring repair. We won’t take the call at that price point. If your Amana has stopped cooling, a new fridge is usually the better spend than a service visit from us.
AGR gas ranges fail at the surface igniter. The igniter clicks, the burner doesn’t light, and people swap the gas valve thinking it’s dead, when the igniter is the part 90 percent of the time, worth knowing before you spend on the wrong part.
AER electric ranges fail at the bake element or the oven sensor. When the oven runs cold, it’s the sensor. When the oven won’t heat at all, it’s the element.
Neither is a repair we take on anymore, though. Range work only pencils out for us at the professional and premium tier, $1,500 and up new, and Amana’s freestanding lineup is well under that mark. If yours needs more than a breaker check, a new range is the better spend than a service call from us.
Over-the-range microwaves are not a repair we take on anymore, on Amana or any other brand. The usual failure is the magnetron around year seven of heavy use, and the parts cost stacked against a new unit rarely wins, so replacement is the answer from the first call rather than a part-by-part decision.
Dishwashers fail at the inlet valve and the door latch, both simple parts, but it isn’t a repair we take on. Amana’s dishwashers sell new well under our $1,000 premium-dishwasher threshold, and at that price the parts cost against a new machine doesn’t pencil out to a repair worth paying for. Replacement is the straighter answer.
Top-load washers share the platform with Whirlpool and Maytag. Same failure modes, same parts, same diagnostic playbook, and the same $1,000 floor: below that on the machine’s original price, a repair rarely beats a new washer, and a standard fix above it starts at $350 with us.
Furnace or AC need a look too? That’s Bay Area HVAC Service, our division for that side of the house, and the replacement assessment visit is free.

Amana questions, answered.
-
My Amana fridge runs constantly and sweats around the door. Why?
Door gasket has set a memory shape and lost the seal. 20-minute replacement, common sizes on the truck. -
My AGR range igniter clicks but won't light. Is the gas valve dead?
No. 90 percent of the time it's the surface igniter. People swap the gas valve assuming the worst. The igniter is the part. Single-visit on-truck fix. -
My over-the-range microwave is dead. Worth fixing?
Honest math. If the magnetron is $180 in parts and a new microwave is $280, we tell you the number and let you decide. Often the right call is replacement. -
Are Amana parts cross-compatible with Whirlpool?
Yes. Same parent platform. Same compressors, same dishwasher pumps, same control-board families. Parts availability is one of the best in the industry.
