Heating & cooling

AC & HVAC repair in Vallejo.

Heating-first HVAC for a bay-cooled city, from downtown Victorians to the Glen Cove homes along the strait.

Vallejo sits on San Pablo Bay where the Napa River becomes the Mare Island Strait, and the water sets the terms for heating and cooling here. The climate is mild and shaped by the bay, and the city can average about 10 degrees cooler than the inland towns nearby. That puts the furnace, or a heat pump doing the furnace's job, at the center of the work. Cooling still counts in a hot spell, but it is the smaller half of the year.

The housing splits into two very different kinds of work. Downtown keeps many Victorian and Craftsman homes built long before forced air. A house like that started out with stoves, a gravity furnace or a floor furnace, and whatever heats it now was fitted into space the house never planned for. Glen Cove, along the Carquinez Strait, is mostly detached homes from the 1980s and 1990s, many with three bedrooms or more, built with ducted furnaces and split air conditioners. Equipment that went in with those houses is now more than thirty years old, so repair against replacement is a live question there.

Hiddenbrooke, the master-planned community off Interstate 80, South Vallejo, and the mixed-use redevelopment on Mare Island fill in the rest of the map. Wherever the house is, the visit opens with a $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair when you go ahead, and a written quote before any work starts. ADRIUM holds EPA 608 Universal certification and is licensed under CSLB #1136642.

Downtown Victorians and Craftsman houses

A Victorian or Craftsman house was framed for a stove or a gravity furnace, not for ducts. If yours still runs a wall or floor furnace, we repair it when it is safe to repair: thermocouple, pilot assembly, gas valve, and a look at the vent and the combustion air before we leave. Old equipment is not automatically finished, and we say in writing which way yours goes.

When it is time to replace, running new ductwork through plaster walls and finished ceilings is the expensive route. A ductless heat pump puts heads in the rooms that need them and routes the line sets outside. ADRIUM is factory-trained on Mitsubishi and Daikin ductless systems, and a bay-cooled winter is light duty for either one.

Glen Cove furnaces and air conditioners

The 1980s and 1990s homes in Glen Cove were built with ducted systems: a gas furnace in the garage, the attic or a hall closet, and a condenser outside. On a furnace of that age we test the hot surface igniter, the flame sensor, the inducer motor and the pressure switch, then inspect the heat exchanger for cracks before recommending anything. Condensers close to the strait take salt air on their coils and cabinets, and that shortens their life. If an air conditioner from that era still runs R-22, a refrigerant leak changes the math, because that refrigerant is no longer made. We lay out furnace repair and replacement side by side, with both numbers in writing.

Why a heat pump suits the Vallejo climate

A mild winter is easy work for a modern inverter heat pump. It seldom gets cold enough here to push one near its limits, so a heat pump can replace a worn furnace and add cooling for the warm spells with one outdoor unit instead of two machines. In a ducted home like the ones in Glen Cove, a ducted heat pump can often reuse the existing runs once we have tested them for leaks and checked their size. In the downtown houses, ductless is usually the cleaner fit. We size equipment to a room-by-room load, not to the old nameplate, and quote the full scope through HVAC installation before anything is ordered. Maintenance visits include a coil rinse, which outdoor units near the water need.

Common questions, Vallejo.

My downtown Vallejo Victorian has a floor furnace and no ducts. Can it still be repaired?

In many cases, yes. Floor and wall furnaces fail at a few known parts: the thermocouple, the pilot assembly and the gas valve. We check the venting and combustion air on every one, because on old open-flame equipment safety comes before comfort. If the unit is past safe repair, we write that down and quote a ductless heat pump as the replacement.

Is central air worth adding in a city this close to the bay?

The bay keeps most summer days mild, so a stand-alone air conditioner is hard to justify for a few hot weeks. The case changes when your furnace is due for replacement anyway. A heat pump replaces it and brings cooling along with it. If your furnace has good years left, we will tell you that and leave it alone.

What does the first visit cost for a Glen Cove home?

The diagnostic is $99, and it is credited toward the repair if you approve the work. You get a written quote before we start. ADRIUM is licensed under CSLB #1136642, and refrigerant work falls under the company's EPA 608 Universal certification.

Pricing HVAC repair starts with a $99 diagnostic, credited toward the approved repair, which makes the service call $0 with a completed repair. Considering a new HVAC system? The in-home estimate visit is free.
