San Mateo's downtown around B Street and Third Avenue has one of the busier restaurant and retail strips on the Peninsula, and the residential streets that ring it, Baywood, Beresford, Hayward Park, have a mix of older Craftsman homes and newer remodels where a Miele column or dishwasher got specified during the kitchen work. A lot of these houses are on the smaller side for the Peninsula, so the built-in fit matters more than it would on a bigger lot.

Out toward Hillsdale and the newer condo buildings near the Caltrain corridor, I see more recent G Series dishwashers and built-in ovens that came in through a full remodel rather than original construction. Either way, the calls I get in San Mateo are usually a household that's had the unit long enough to trust it, and something finally went wrong.

G Series Dishwasher Drain Pump, Inlet Valve, and Control Faults. This is the most common call I get in the Baywood and Hillsdale remodels, a G Series dishwasher that stops draining or won't fill. I read the fault code off the display first, since that tells me whether it's the drain pump, the inlet valve, or a control board issue before I take a single panel off.
KF Column Defrost Drain Clog. The KF bottom-freezer columns in the older Craftsman remodels clog at the defrost drain the same way they do everywhere, water backing up behind the evaporator and showing up as a puddle somewhere that doesn't point straight back to the fridge. I clear the drain and check the heater element before I close it up.
W1 Washer Drain Pump and Drum Bearing Wear. A handful of the older San Mateo installs are running a Miele W1 washer that's been in service long enough for the drum bearing to start growling on the spin cycle, or the drain pump to seize from lint and debris buildup. I check both together, since a worn bearing left alone eventually takes the bearing housing with it.
