Common issues we see
What breaks. What we fix.
Gaggenau sits at the top of the German luxury bracket, and in the Bay Area we find it in architect-built and estate kitchens where the whole suite is Gaggenau: a 400 series oven, a combi-steam unit, a Vario cooktop, and a built-in cooling column. The brand is part of BSH, the same group behind Bosch and Thermador, so the parts pipeline and the platforms are familiar to us.
The cooking side runs the 400 and 200 series wall ovens and combi-steam ovens, the Vario cooktops across gas, induction, electric, and Teppan Yaki, plus ventilation. The cold side is the Vario cooling built-in refrigeration and wine columns, which share a platform with the Thermador Freedom and Bosch built-in columns. We service all of it, including the dishwashers.
On the ovens, the call we run most is the electronic control board with a stored fault code, a dark display, or an oven that stops holding temperature. We read the code before condemning a board, because a drifting sensor and a failed control look identical from the front and cost very different money. The heavy oven doors wear their hinge cartridges and gaskets, which shows up as slow preheat and a hot oven front. Combi-steam units fail at the steam generator and the descale routine. On the Vario induction the generator board is the part that goes, usually with an element-fault code.
The built-in cooling columns fail the way the BSH platform does. The ice maker is one call, but the defrost system is the other one people miss. These columns run an adaptive defrost with two heaters, one on the evaporator and one on the drain, and when the drain heater quits or the drain clogs, meltwater refreezes at the bottom of the cabinet and you get a slab of ice under the lowest drawer. We test both heaters and the drain path rather than just chipping the ice out.
Almost always worth repairing
A Gaggenau is a built-in luxury suite set into custom cabinetry, and replacing a single piece means a cabinetry refit on top of the equipment cost. On a Gaggenau the answer is nearly always to repair it, and BSH ownership keeps the parts available. We give a straight repair-or-replace read before we start.
Gas work is licensed (CSLB #1136642) and we bring the gas-leak detector on the truck. A straightforward repair starts around $250 plus parts, and the $75 service call includes full diagnostics. We quote before any work.
