If your kitchen is short on overhead space, the bottom-mounted True T-23-HC has the edge over the top-mounted Beverage-Air HR1HC-1S. The Beverage-Air needs 12 inches clear above its 85-inch installed height, standard casters included. That adds up to 97 inches, so in its standard configuration it can’t meet that requirement under an eight-foot ceiling. With the optional 3-inch casters it stands about 82 inches, which can leave the 12 inches. Confirm that option with the supplier.
Where the height works for either one, compare floor space and storage layout. The Beverage-Air is narrower and deeper. The True has a raised lower shelf and its condenser down low. Think through the installation and how your staff will use it before you pick.
Start with the two models
This covers the Beverage-Air HR1HC-1S and the True T-23-HC, two single-door, solid-door commercial refrigerators in their US configurations. Beverage-Air also makes bottom-mount reach-ins, and True makes top-mount ones. Where the compressor sits is a model choice within each brand.
Keep the equipment class the same when you ask for quotes. A beverage merchandiser, prep table or freezer does a different job. Both of these cabinets have stainless fronts and aluminum interior liners. An all-stainless cabinet is a different spec. Each quote should name the model, the options and the current document revision. Local stock and delivery timing come from the seller, not from the manufacturer’s listing.
Measure the installed cabinet and the airflow clearances
The Beverage-Air spec sheet, issued February 2026, gives these dimensions:
- Width: 26 inches
- Depth: 33 3/4 inches
- Height: 85 inches with standard casters
- Depth with the door open 90 degrees: 55 1/8 inches
Its HR installation manual calls for 12 inches above and 3 inches behind, with no side clearance. The front grille has to stay clear. Measure to the lowest shelf, pipe or soffit above the spot, not just to the ceiling.
The currently posted True spec sheet, dated January 2024, lists a 27-inch width, 29 1/2-inch depth and 78 3/8-inch cabinet height. A footnote adds 5 inches for casters, so plan on about 83 3/8 inches. For a close fit, get the drawing for the quoted casters or legs (the optional 6-inch legs make it about 84 3/8 inches). Order against the height with casters, not the bare cabinet.
True’s T-Series installation manual lists zero top and side clearance and 1 inch behind T-Series refrigerators. The freezer row is different. Those are ventilation minimums. Leave separate room for service access, door swing and staff moving around.
The delivery company should check every doorway, turn and threshold against the configured height, including where they’ll uncrate it, and tell you how they’ll handle it. Smaller optional casters change the spec, so agree on them with the supplier instead of treating them as a delivery-day fix.
Check the shelves with your containers
Both models come with three adjustable wire shelves. Beverage-Air lists tray-slide options, and True lists optional bun-tray racks. Get the accessory and the pan orientation on the quote.
Bring the size of your largest lidded food bin and the number you need on each shelf. Look at the usable opening, the shelf spacing and the inside airflow paths that have to stay open. Check whether a bin comes straight out with the door open as far as your aisle allows.
True says its bottom-mount layout gives you a raised lower shelf. That can make low stock easier for your team to reach. Try the loading position with a full container if you can. That’s the test for whether staff can lift it into place comfortably.
Plan how maintenance will actually happen
On the Beverage-Air, you reach the condenser through the upper front panel. On the True, the condensing unit is at the bottom. Find out how your service company will reach each one once the neighboring equipment and shelves are in.
Keep carts and stored supplies out of the access area. The technician can point out any room needed to move the cabinet safely for maintenance.
Set the cleaning schedule from the manual, then have the service company adjust how often it inspects for the buildup your kitchen actually produces. Neither mounting position gets rid of cleaning. Both models use R290 refrigerant, and refrigerant work belongs with a technician trained for that equipment. Leave condenser work that means opening a panel to the service company.
Make the quote match the kitchen
Go with the True when overhead clearance or cabinet depth is what limits you. Look at the Beverage-Air where its narrower width and shelf layout suit your storage, as long as its overhead and rear clearances are there.
Get the full delivered-and-installed scope in each quote: casters or legs, shelving accessories, door handing, placement, removal of the old cabinet and the warranty terms. Then compare totals for the same work.
If a failing refrigerator started this search, read our commercial refrigeration repair-or-replace guide first. For an assessment of a reach-in you already have in the Bay Area, contact ADRIUM commercial refrigeration service with the model, the symptoms and photos of where it sits. We repair both Beverage-Air and True. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair, and you get a written estimate before any work starts. That gives you a repair number to put next to the replacement quote.
