Hotel Espresso Machine Down: Grinder Service for Crowne Plaza in Foster City

The lobby WMF super-automatic at Crowne Plaza Foster City locked itself out and asked for a cleaning it could no longer do alone. What a commercial coffee service call looks like when the machine serves hundreds of guests.

By July 18, 2026

When a hotel lobby machine goes down, it is not one broken appliance, it is every guest who walks past it before breakfast. Crowne Plaza in Foster City runs a WMF 2000 S super-automatic in the lobby: espresso, latte, hot chocolate, eight buttons, no barista. It had locked itself out asking for a cleaning, and by the time a machine like this refuses to pour, the inside is usually past what the built-in rinse program can reach.

WMF machine opened for service with the hotel atrium in the background Service in place, right in the lobby. Our photo from the job, not a stock image.

What we found

Both grinders were coated in oxidized coffee oil, with grounds and whole beans worked deep into the mechanisms. That is normal wear for a machine pouring at hotel volume, and it is exactly the failure mode that a staff-run rinse cycle cannot touch: the cleaning program flushes the brew path, but nobody’s tablet reaches inside a grinder.

Inside the WMF with the top panel off, both grinders visible Top panel off: both grinders coated in grounds and coffee oil, beans worked deep into the mechanism.

What we did

We stripped and cleaned both grinder assemblies on site, degreased the adjustment rings, cleared the chutes, cleaned the brew path, and ran the machine back to spec. It was pouring again the same visit, which is the part the hotel actually cares about.

The second half of the job is scheduled: the gaskets have aged past the point where cleaning helps, so we are coming back with the full maintenance kit for this model, gaskets and fittings included. Splitting the work keeps the machine in service between visits instead of waiting on parts in pieces.

Commercial coffee is a service line, not a side job

Hotels, offices, and restaurants run on machines like this, and they fail on schedules that have nothing to do with business hours. Our commercial coffee work runs through our division, Bay Area Coffee Service, which handles WMF, Franke, La Marzocco, and the rest of the commercial fleet across the Bay Area. On the ADRIUM side, see our WMF page or commercial coffee machine repair.

If your building has a machine that guests or staff depend on, the $99 diagnostic is waived with the repair, and a written estimate comes before any wrench work. Call (925) 999-4095.
