Tempstar in Moraga

Tempstar heating and cooling in Moraga.

Moraga sits in a bowl in the hills east of Oakland, and that geography does something specific to HVAC loads. Summer afternoons regularly push into the mid-90s on the valley floor, but the houses themselves are a mixed bag. The older ranch tracts along Moraga Road and around the Country Club have ducted gas furnaces paired with split-system AC, often original to the 1960s or 70s builds. The Tempstar equipment we see out here tends to be contractor-installed QuietComfort units, sometimes a decade old, running hard through those hot stretches every July and August.

When I diagnose a Tempstar system I pull the control board fault history first. The communicating models log a lot, and even the simpler QuietComfort boards store a flash code sequence that tells me whether the igniter gave up, whether a pressure switch is nuisance-tripping, or whether the high-limit is going open on the furnace side. I do not swap parts blind. On the cooling side, I check capacitor microfarad readings under load and inspect the contactor contacts before I call anything bad, because those two components account for a large share of no-cool calls in hot inland summers.

Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, operating out of San Ramon. Moraga is a straightforward run for us. Diagnostic fee is $75, and that gets waived in full if you approve the repair. You get a written quote before I touch anything. We carry EPA Section 608 Universal certification and operate under CSLB license 1136642. Repairs are backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor. New installations come with ten years on parts and ten years on labor.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The QuietComfort furnace fires fine on a cool October morning and then starts short-cycling or locks out with a no-ignition fault code as the season goes on. Typically the hot surface igniter is cracked or its resistance has drifted out of spec after years of thermal cycling. I measure resistance before condemning it, replace it with the correct silicon nitride element for the model, then watch a full ignition sequence to confirm the flame sensor picks up cleanly before I close the cabinet.
  • Flame Sensor Fouling and Nuisance Lockout. A fouled flame sensor is one of the more common service calls on Tempstar gas furnaces in this area. The burner lights, the flame sensor does not pass enough microamp signal through the contaminated rod, and the board shuts down gas within a few seconds, so the house never heats up. I clean the rod, confirm the microamp reading is well within spec, and check flue venting for any back-draft conditions that may have deposited combustion residue on the sensor in the first place.
  • Capacitor and Contactor Wear on the Condenser. After several hot Moraga summers the run capacitor on a Tempstar condenser drifts low on microfarads, and the compressor or condenser fan starts drawing higher current trying to compensate. Left alone, that kills the motor. I test both capacitors under actual operating voltage, not only with a meter set to auto-range, and I inspect the contactor face for pitting before deciding what to replace. Both parts are direct OEM-equivalent from the Carrier supply chain, the same components that go into a Carrier-branded unit.

FAQ

Tempstar in Moraga questions, answered.

  • Do you actually come out to Moraga, or is that too far from San Ramon?
We come out to Moraga regularly. San Ramon is over the ridge via Crow Canyon and 680, and we run service calls throughout the Lamorinda area. Scheduling a morning appointment means I am typically at your door before noon.
  • My Tempstar system is around fifteen years old. Is it worth repairing, or should I be thinking about replacement?
Fifteen years is not automatic replacement territory on a Tempstar unit, since the underlying Carrier-engineered components are solid. It depends on what failed and what the repair cost looks like relative to the remaining useful life. A cracked igniter or a bad capacitor costs little and buys you years. A failed compressor on an older R-22 system is a different conversation. I give you a straight assessment after the diagnostic so you can decide without pressure.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic actually include, and what warranty do I get on the work?
The diagnostic fee covers a full system evaluation: I pull fault codes, measure electrical readings on key components, and give you a written quote with a clear explanation of what I found and why. If you move forward with the repair, the $75 is dropped from the invoice entirely. The repair itself is backed by a one-year warranty on both parts and labor.
