Tempstar in Lafayette

Tempstar heating and cooling in Lafayette.

Lafayette sits inland enough that summer afternoons push well into the 90s, and the older neighborhoods off Pleasant Hill Road and up toward the Reliez Valley corridor have a mix of housing that shapes what we see on service calls. Mid-century ranch homes with existing ductwork are common here, and that ductwork tends to run Tempstar or a sibling brand because a local independent contractor picked it up at a good price point years ago. That is usually fine. The bones are Carrier-engineered, and they hold up.

When a Tempstar system is acting up we start by pulling the fault codes off the control board, not by guessing at parts. On the communicating variable-speed models, the board gives us a clear history. On the older single-stage units we check the flame sensor first because it is the most common reason a furnace lights, runs for a few seconds, and then shuts back down. In summer, we check the capacitor before anything else on a condenser that struggles to start or runs hot. Lafayette gets real heat, and capacitors that are marginal in spring will not survive an August peak.

Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, based out of San Ramon, about 20 minutes from most Lafayette addresses. The diagnostic is $75, and we waive that fee if you approve the repair the same visit. Before any work starts you get a written quote. We hold an EPA Section 608 Universal certification and operate under CSLB license 1136642. Repairs carry a 1-year parts and labor warranty; if you are replacing the system entirely, installations come with 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Hot Surface Igniter Failure. A cracked or open hot surface igniter is probably the most routine furnace call we run on Tempstar equipment. The board calls for heat, the inducer spins up, and then nothing ignites because the igniter never glows. Sometimes you get a no-heat lockout code; sometimes the system just keeps cycling and never lights. We confirm resistance is out of spec before condemning it, swap in the correct OEM igniter, and verify the system runs through a full heat cycle before we leave.
  • Flame Sensor Fouling and Short Cycling. Tempstar furnaces share the same flame sensor design you find across the Carrier family, and after several heating seasons the rod accumulates oxidation that prevents it from passing enough microamp current to satisfy the control board. The result is a furnace that lights cleanly, runs for a few seconds, and then drops out on a safety trip. A light clean often restores it, but if the sensor is pitted or corroded through we replace it. We also check the combustion air and venting path because a weak flame from a partial blockage will fool a sensor that was otherwise fine.
  • Capacitor and Contactor Wear on the Condenser. In the Diablo Valley heat, a run capacitor that tests borderline in spring will often fail outright by late July. On a Tempstar condenser the symptom is typically a compressor or fan motor that hums but does not start, or a unit that runs but underperforms and trips the high-pressure limit. We test capacitance on the bench before ordering anything. The contactor is a second high-wear item on systems that cycle hard through long Bay Area summers, and if the contacts are pitted we replace it at the same visit to avoid a callback.

FAQ

Tempstar in Lafayette questions, answered.

  • Do you actually come out to Lafayette, or is San Ramon too far?
Lafayette is a regular run for us. San Ramon is about 20 minutes via Highway 24, and we schedule Lafayette calls the same as any other Tri-Valley or Diablo Valley address. No extra travel fee.
  • Is Tempstar a reasonable choice for a Lafayette home, or should I be pushing for a different brand on a replacement?
It is a reasonable choice if you bought it through a contractor who priced it competitively, which is usually why it ends up in Bay Area homes. The compressor, the heat exchanger, the control board, these are Carrier-platform components under a different badge. On a replacement we will walk through the options at estimate time, including what rebates actually pay out right now, so you can make that call with real numbers. If the existing Tempstar equipment is under ten years old and the repair cost is proportionate, repairing usually pencils out.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic include, and what kind of warranty do I get on the work?
The $75 covers a full system inspection and fault diagnosis, not only a visual once-over. We pull codes, test components, and give you a written quote on the spot. If you approve the repair that visit, the $75 is waived entirely. Parts and labor on repairs are covered for one year. On a full system installation the warranty extends to 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor.
