Tempstar in Alamo

Tempstar heating and cooling in Alamo.

Alamo sits in the Diablo Valley, and the heat here is serious. We see mid-century ranch tracts off Miranda Avenue and Stone Valley Road running ducted Tempstar furnaces paired with split-system AC that have been doing heavy cooling work every July and August for years. The load is real: inland Tri-Valley temperatures routinely hit the high 90s, and those older systems earn their hours. Tempstar's QuietComfort and communicating variable-speed units both show up in the newer builds closer to the hills.

Tempstar is a Carrier-platform label, same engineering and components as Heil and Comfortmaker. That matters for diagnostics because the control board fault codes, the igniter part numbers, the refrigerant circuit behavior, they all trace back to Carrier architecture. We read the board, pull the fault history, and follow the fault to the actual failed component. We do not swap parts to see what sticks. On heat pumps we check defrost cycle logic and reversing valve operation before touching the refrigerant charge, because those fail differently here than they would in a coastal microclimate.

Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, based in San Ramon, a short run from Alamo. Diagnostic fee is $75, and we waive it if you authorize the repair. You get a written quote before anything is touched, no verbal estimates. We hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification and operate under CSLB license 1136642. New installs carry a 10-year parts and 10-year labor warranty. Repair work is backed by a 1-year warranty on the parts and labor we put in.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Hot Surface Igniter Failure on Tempstar Gas Furnaces. The most common furnace call we run in Alamo is a cracked or open hot surface igniter. The furnace induces draft, the board calls for ignition, and nothing lights. You get lockout after two or three tries, usually a fault code pointing at ignition. The igniters on these Carrier-platform furnaces are fragile silicon nitride or silicon carbide elements and they do not last forever, especially in systems that cycle hard through long Bay Area summers running fan-only and then switch to heat in November. We confirm the igniter resistance is out of spec, replace it with the correct OEM part, and verify flame establishment before we close up.
  • Flame Sensor Contamination Cutting Out on Ignition. A dirty flame sensor is a close second. The furnace lights, you see a flame for two or three seconds, then it shuts off and tries again. After a few cycles it locks out. The flame sensor rod develops an oxide coating that prevents the board from reading the rectified current that proves flame is present. This is not a parts failure so much as a maintenance failure, and it is common in systems that have gone a few seasons without a tune-up. We clean or replace the sensor, check the microamp reading against spec, and confirm the furnace runs through a full heat cycle.
  • Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Wear on AC and Heat Pump Units. Outdoor condensing units in Alamo work hard from May through October, and capacitors and contactors take the brunt of that. A weak run capacitor causes the compressor or condenser fan motor to draw high amperage and struggle to start, sometimes humming without spinning or tripping the breaker. Burned or pitted contactor points cause the same symptom from the electrical side. We measure capacitance and compare it to the nameplate rating, check contactor coil resistance and contact surface condition, and replace whatever is out of spec. These are straightforward repairs but skipping them turns a $150 call into a compressor replacement.

FAQ

Tempstar in Alamo questions, answered.

  • Do you actually come out to Alamo, or is that outside your area?
Alamo is a quick drive from our San Ramon shop, well inside our normal service area. We cover the Tri-Valley regularly and carry parts for Carrier-platform equipment including Tempstar, so we are not making a special trip. Standard scheduling applies.
  • Is Tempstar equipment a reasonable fit for Alamo homes, or should I be looking at something else?
Tempstar is solid Carrier-engineered hardware sold at a lower price point. The bones are the same as a Carrier or Bryant. What you give up is the badge and, depending on the installer, some depth in the dealer network. For a mid-century ranch in Alamo that needs a reliable ducted system without paying a premium for a name, it is a reasonable choice. The QuietComfort single-stage units are simple and serviceable. The communicating variable-speed models perform well but require a tech who knows the Carrier control architecture to diagnose properly, which we do.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic cover, and what kind of warranty do I get on the repair?
The $75 covers a full diagnostic: we read fault codes, test the suspect components, and trace the failure to a specific cause. You get a written quote from that finding before any work starts. If you authorize the repair, the $75 comes off the bill. Parts and labor on the repair are covered for one year. On a new system installation, the warranty extends to 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor.
