Redwood City is the county seat, and the downtown blocks around Courthouse Square and Broadway have filled in with new residential towers over the last several years. Those condo kitchens usually run a single Miele column and a G Series dishwasher packed into a galley layout that leaves almost no clearance around either unit.
Head a few blocks out toward Mount Carmel or Redwood Village and the story changes. Those are older Craftsman and bungalow-style homes where a Miele unit went in during a full kitchen expansion, not at original construction, so I'm often working around a layout that was built around the appliance instead of the other way around.

- MasterCool Column Airflow Restriction in Tight Condo Enclosures. The high-rise condo kitchens downtown box the MasterCool column into cabinetry with barely the clearance Miele calls for, and the condenser can't shed heat properly. The compressor runs long, overheats, and trips on thermal protection or short-cycles. I check the venting gap first, because a new compressor stuffed back into the same tight enclosure fails the same way within a year.
- G Series Dishwasher Drain Pump Failure. In both the downtown condos and the Mount Carmel remodels, the G Series drain pump is the part I replace most, usually after it seizes from mineral buildup or a stray piece of glass gets past the filter and jams the impeller. Standing water at the bottom of the tub at the end of a cycle is the giveaway before I even pull the kickplate.
- CVA Built-In Coffee Machine Brew Unit Jam. A handful of the downtown condos came with a CVA built-in coffee machine, and the brew unit is the part that jams first, usually from coffee oil buildup or a grind setting that's too fine for the burr to clear on its own. I pull the brew unit, clean it, and check the grinder calibration before running it back through a cycle.
