- Downdraft vent that will not rise. Most downdraft units raise and lower the vent with a small motor, and after years of cycling the lift mechanism binds or stops answering the switch. We check the switch signal, the motor and the linkage in turn, then replace the one that failed rather than the whole assembly.
- Downdraft blower running but pulling weakly. The fan comes on, yet steam and smoke drift up past the vent instead of pulling down. We clean the grease filter and check that it is seated, then test the blower motor and look for a blockage in the duct. A weak motor gets replaced; a crushed or blocked duct we point out for repair.
- Ice maker fill tube frozen solid. When the inlet valve lets water seep through or the freezer runs too cold near the fill tube, water freezes in the tube and the ice maker gets nothing. We thaw the tube, test the valve for leak-through, and check the freezer temperature so the tube keeps clear.

Can a downdraft range be fixed, or should we swap it for an overhead hood?
A downdraft is fixable. The lift motor, switch, linkage and blower are all separate parts, and a range that still cooks well is worth keeping. Converting to an overhead hood means new ducting and cabinet work, which is a remodel rather than a repair. -
We live in a Hercules townhome. Do you need access to anything outside the unit?
