Common issues we see
What breaks. What we fix.
ILVE makes beautiful Italian ranges, the brass-trim Nostalgie and the Majestic and Professional Plus lines, and they are also one of the more demanding brands to keep running. We see them in Bay Area estate kitchens where the owner wanted the look of a hand-finished Italian range, and we know the failure patterns, which matters because an ILVE punishes a parts-swap-and-hope approach.
Ignition is the call we run most. The spark module and the individual burner igniter switches fail, and the symptom is a burner that clicks without lighting, or all burners clicking when you turn one. We test the module, the switch, and the electrode before ordering, because on ILVE the wrong guess means a long wait on an imported part.
The gas safety system is the next bucket. ILVE ovens use a flame-failure device, a thermocouple and FFD valve that has to sense the flame to keep the gas on. When the thermocouple weakens or the FFD fails, the oven lights and then dies a few seconds after you release the knob. We diagnose the thermocouple, the FFD valve, and the oven thermostat as a set, since they present the same way from the front.
Dual-fuel models add an electric oven, and there the calls are the oven element, the oven thermostat or electronic control, and the cooling fan. The multi-function oven selector switch is a known weak point across the range. Door hinges and gaskets wear on the heavy oven doors and break the seal, which shows up as slow preheat and a hot door front.
Worth repairing, with eyes open
An ILVE is a serious investment and the cabinet and burners outlast the electrics, so a repair almost always beats replacing a $6,000 to $15,000 range. The honest part: ILVE parts are imported, so some components carry a lead time and a price that a domestic brand would not. We tell you that up front. The advantage of using a shop that knows ILVE is that we diagnose to the exact failed part the first time, so you order once and wait once.
Gas work is licensed (CSLB #1136642) and we bring the gas-leak detector on every call. A straightforward ignition or thermocouple repair starts around $250 plus parts, the $75 service call includes full diagnostics, and we quote before any work and before we order an Italian part.
