What we close on the truck.

Condenser coil fouled inside built-in cabinetry. A unit built tight into home bar cabinetry often has restricted airflow around the condenser coil, and dust from the surrounding millwork and carpet settles into the fins over time. Once the coil is fouled it can't reject heat properly, so head pressure and amp draw climb on every cycle, and the run capacitor is usually the first thing to fail since it's the weakest electrical part in the circuit.
Water line or drain gradually restricted. Piedmont's hillside water pressure and mineral content vary block to block, and I've seen fill valves scale up faster in some homes than others as a result. The unit doesn't quit outright, it throws a low production fault, and in a home that only uses the ice machine for entertaining, that fault can go unnoticed for months.
Auger motor and gearbox worn despite light use. I've pulled gearboxes out of Piedmont estate units that see maybe a few hours of runtime a month and still find the flight worn thin or the gear train loose. Age and long idle stretches wear the internals just as much as steady daily use does, so infrequent use isn't protection against this failure.
