Berkeley has one of the densest concentrations of small cafes and restaurants I service anywhere in the East Bay, from Fourth Street down through the Gourmet Ghetto and around campus, and a lot of that equipment is older Horizon 700 units installed when the buildings were converted decades ago. Volume swings hard here with the academic calendar, quiet in August, slammed during finals week and move in, and a machine that was fine all summer suddenly gets pushed past what it can handle.

Older commercial kitchen spaces near campus often have tight mechanical closets with poor airflow, which stresses the condenser side of these machines regardless of how clean the coil is kept. Condenser Coil Fouling and Capacitor Failure. A cramped mechanical closet with a door that stays shut most of the day traps heat around the condenser even on a coil that looks clean, and that alone pushes head pressure and amp draw up cycle after cycle. The run capacitor takes that stress first and fails before the compressor does. I check closet airflow and clearance on every Berkeley call, not just coil condition.
Water Inlet or Drain Blockage. A restricted water inlet or a slow running drain reads on the Horizon display as a low production alarm, and during finals week or a big campus event that alarm can mean a cafe running out of ice mid rush. I trace the water path end to end before opening up the refrigeration side, since that's usually the faster fix.
Auger Motor and Gearbox Wear. Cafes running these machines at near constant volume during the school year put more cycles on the auger motor and gearbox than most restaurants see in a year of normal service. When a unit runs, sounds fine, but barely fills the bin, I check auger amp draw under load before quoting anything on the compressor side.
