The call we see most often is a machine that’s never been maintained. Follett’s self-contained, air-cooled units pull condenser air through the front grille, and in a working kitchen or cafe that grille packs with dust, grease, and lint faster than most owners realize. A clogged condenser coil can’t reject heat, so head pressure and amp draw climb every cycle. The compressor and run capacitor take that abuse until one of them gives out under load, usually the capacitor first since it’s the weakest link electrically. The fix starts with a coil clean, and if the capacitor tested weak or failed, we replace it in the same visit.

Run capacitors on the Horizon line are a common failure independent of the coil issue too. Age, heat, and voltage sag all shorten capacitor life, and a weak capacitor makes the compressor labor to start, which itself adds heat and current draw. When a customer calls about a machine that hums, trips a breaker, or short-cycles, we check the capacitor before assuming the compressor is bad.

Water and drain faults are the second most common call. The auger and freeze-cylinder assembly ride on a water feed and drain path that scales up with hard Bay Area water. A partially blocked water inlet or drain reads as a low-production fault or a “checking water” error code that never clears. We check the water system before assuming the ice-making assembly itself has failed.

Auger motor and gearbox wear shows up as a machine that runs but makes little or no ice, or that stalls under load. We test amp draw on the auger circuit separately from the compressor side, since the two failure paths get confused for each other over the phone.

The pattern across all of it: Follett machines are relatively low maintenance, but they aren’t no maintenance. A quarterly coil clean is the cheapest insurance a cafe or office can buy for one of these machines.
