Hard-water scale that home descaling will not clear. This leads the list in Walnut Creek. We run a deeper descale and flush, clear the valve, and check that flow and brew pressure are back to spec. If scale has already pitted the boiler, I show you the evidence and quote the part rather than selling you cycle after cycle that will not hold.
No heat after long scale buildup (thermal cutout / boiler). On a scaled Breville, a boiler element can overheat locally and trip its one-shot thermal cutout, and then the machine powers on and pumps but never gets hot. I test the heating circuit and the cutout on the bench, replace the failed part, and clear the scale that caused it so it does not trip again a week later. A cutout is a small fix. A boiler cracked by scale is bigger, and you get that number before any work.
Weak steam and pressure on an Oracle or Dual Boiler. When steam goes soft and shots lose pressure, the over-pressure valve or the pump is usually involved, often alongside scale in the steam path. I gauge the brew and steam pressure, check the pump and OPV, and clear any scale narrowing the lines. On the Oracle and Dual Boiler there are more valves to isolate, so the diagnostic is a bit longer, and I quote each part before starting.
