Los Gatos mixes old downtown Victorians near Santa Cruz Avenue with newer hillside homes climbing toward Monte Sereno. The coffee habit here is serious, and a lot of kitchens run a Breville Oracle or Oracle Touch that grinds and pulls in one motion. When that grinder drifts, the whole shot goes with it.

Most of my Los Gatos calls come down to grind and dose. The machine used to pull a clean shot and now it chokes or gushes, and the owner has already turned the grind dial every direction. On Breville machines with the integrated conical burrs, that is usually worn or misaligned burrs, not the brew side at all.

I check the grinder first because it is the quickest thing to rule out, then move to pump and heat only if the numbers say so.

What we repair on the bench.

Grinder choking or running the shot too fast. The conical burrs in an Oracle or Oracle Touch wear down and slip out of alignment, so the same dial setting no longer gives the same grind. We pull and clean the burr set, reset the top burr alignment, and replace worn burrs so the machine holds a consistent dose shot to shot.
Pump running loud with weak extraction. A Breville that groans and pulls a thin shot usually has a tired vibration pump or an OPV fouled with scale. We gauge the pressure, clean or rebuild the valve, and replace the pump when it can no longer hold line pressure through a full shot.
No steam or slow heat recovery. On dual-boiler and Touch models the steam side can stop heating while brew still works, which points at a boiler thermostat or element. We test each circuit separately and replace the failed part so both brew and steam come back to temperature.
