Atosa in Sunnyvale
Atosa commercial service.
Sunnyvale runs on small independent kitchens, and small independent kitchens run on Atosa. Historic Murphy Avenue alone has a strip of restaurants where I could walk door to door and find an MBF reach-in or an MSF prep table in most of them. Add the cafes and micro-kitchens feeding the tech campuses along Mathilda and Java Drive, and this is one of our busiest Atosa cities. The equipment gets bought for the price and then worked hard, twelve hours a day, and the maintenance usually starts the day it first fails.
There is a second Sunnyvale pattern worth naming. The city has approved a wave of ADUs, and a lot of them get compact commercial-style refrigerators because the form factor fits a small kitchenette. Those Atosa undercounters live in tight spaces with poor airflow, and they fail younger than their restaurant siblings. I service both sides of this, the restaurant floor and the backyard unit.
All commercial refrigeration work goes through Bay Area Refrigeration Service, our dedicated commercial division. Andrew Kuznetsov is EPA Section 608 Universal certified, the company is licensed under CSLB #1136642, and we work seven days a week with written quotes up front. The $75 diagnostic disappears from the bill when you approve the repair.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Evaporator fan motor failure in MBF reach-ins. The evaporator fan in Atosa reach-ins is a small shaded-pole motor, and after a few years of continuous duty it either seizes or slows down enough that the coil ices over from poor air movement. The symptom in a Murphy Avenue kitchen is uneven temperature, warm on the top shelf, frozen against the back wall. I replace the motor with an equivalent EM motor that draws less power and runs cooler, so the repair often outlasts the original part.
- R-290 charge loss on newer units. Newer Atosa boxes run R-290 propane refrigerant with a very small charge, sometimes under 150 grams. A leak that a big old R-404A system would shrug off for months kills an R-290 unit in days. The unit runs constantly and never pulls down. R-290 work requires proper handling, and our EPA Section 608 Universal certification covers the full diagnostic. I find the leak, and I am honest about whether a repair or replacement makes sense on a capillary tube system, because not every leak location is economically fixable.
- Prep table rail temperatures failing health inspection. Sunnyvale inspectors check rail pan temperatures on prep tables, and Atosa MSF units lose the rail before they lose the cabinet. Worn lid gaskets, a low charge, or an iced coil all show up first as pans reading above 41 degrees while the base still feels cold. I measure actual pan product temperature, not just the display, then work backward through gaskets, airflow, and charge. Catching this before the inspector does is a much cheaper appointment.

FAQ
Atosa in Sunnyvale questions, answered.
-
What is your response time to Sunnyvale from San Ramon?
About 45 minutes via 680 and 237 outside of rush hour. Sunnyvale sits in the middle of our South Bay routing with Mountain View, Cupertino, Los Altos, and San Jose, so trucks pass through it constantly and same-day service is realistic for most calls. A restaurant with product at risk gets bumped to the front of the day's route. -
My Atosa is only three years old. Why is it already failing?
Three years of restaurant duty is roughly 26,000 running hours, and Atosa builds to a price point. Fan motors, start components, and probes are the parts where the savings live, and those are what fail first. The good news is they are cheap to replace, and a unit that gets its coil cleaned twice a year and a couple of small parts along the way will run a long time. The core refrigeration circuit is usually sound. -
Do you handle the compact commercial units in ADUs and rentals?
Yes, and Sunnyvale gives us a steady stream of them. Property owners put Atosa undercounters into ADU kitchenettes because they are affordable and fit the space. We service them under the same terms as restaurant equipment, written quote first, $75 diagnostic waived with repair, one year warranty on the work.
