When a Rancilio Silvia steam wand stops working, the fault is usually in one of three places: the tip, the O-rings, or the steam valve. There is one check before all three: confirm that the boiler is actually ready to make steam. A wand opened while the machine is still heating can produce weak output that looks like a failed part.

Once the wand is cool, remove the tip according to the model instructions and hold it up to a light. If the hole or holes are not open, the tip is the first suspect.
Soaking and clearing the tip is barista-level maintenance when done with the correct solution and a tool that will not damage the passage. Reattach it carefully. Cross-threading or over-tightening can crack the tip or prevent the joint from sealing. A proper tip cleaning is about ten minutes when handled during a service visit, and the service also checks whether milk residue has traveled farther into the wand assembly.
The wipe-and-purge habit matters more than a late rescue. Wipe the wand after every use, purge after steaming, and avoid allowing milk to be pulled back through a warm tip. During a rush, skipping that two-second routine is enough to turn a good wand into a restricted one.
O-ring failure: steam at the base
If the tip looks clear but steam escapes around the base of the wand instead of through the tip, an O-ring is the likely cause. The Silvia has O-rings at the steam valve shaft and at the wand ball joint. The number and location differ between older and newer versions.
Heat cycles change rubber. An O-ring can lose its shape, crack, or become hard enough that it no longer seals when the valve opens. The symptoms include sideways steam, a hissing sound at the base, a leak that appears only under steam pressure, or a wand that loses pressure even though the tip is open.
Replacement requires a completely cool machine, released residual pressure, the correct part for the Silvia version, and careful disassembly of fittings near the boiler. A pinched or misaligned O-ring can leak again immediately. A wrong part can make the knob feel normal while still allowing steam to escape. That is why this repair is better handled as part of a measured service visit rather than as a blind rubber-part swap.
Steam valve problems
The steam valve controls the passage when the knob turns. If the tip is clear, the O-rings are intact, the boiler is fully hot, and there is still no steam or only a weak stream, the valve is the next area to inspect.
Common valve signs include a gritty or stiff knob, a valve that opens but produces nothing, steam that continues after the knob is closed, or a slow wand drip while the machine is at rest. Mineral scale inside the valve body can keep it from opening fully or prevent the seat from sealing. The same scale can restrict the passage enough to mimic low boiler pressure.
Valve work means opening the machine, accessing the boiler assembly, and working on fittings that are easy to strip. Residual pressure and hot water make the sequence important.
