Nuova Simonelli grinders, especially the MDX and Mythos series, tend to fail in recognizable ways. The same complaint, “the shots are inconsistent” or “the grinder will not start,” can come from burr geometry, motor load, the dose sensor, or the control electronics. The useful diagnosis starts with what changed in the cup and what the machine did while it changed.
Record the model, whether it is a Mythos One or Mythos Two, whether dosing is by time or weight, and whether the fault is constant or appears after the grinder warms up. Do not use a generic burr-life number as a substitute for looking at the burrs. Volume and roast profile change the load substantially.
Burrs, grind distribution, and channeling
The Mythos One uses 75mm flat burrs. The Mythos Two uses 85mm titanium burrs. The MDX uses 64mm flat burrs. Titanium commercial burrs generally last significantly longer than lower-grade burrs, but volume and roast still decide the actual interval. Flat burrs can deliver excellent consistency, but once the cutting edges round over or the faces glaze, the grinder can produce a broader and less predictable distribution.
Dark, oily coffee speeds up glazing on the burr faces. A busy bar can notice the extraction change before the burrs look completely destroyed. Shots may channel, run fast and sour, or require a setting that keeps drifting even though the dose and recipe have not changed. The MDX has smaller 64mm burrs, so heavy volume can make wear visible sooner than an operator expects from a larger Mythos platform.
The technician checks the cutting edges by sight and touch, looks for rounded edges and glazed faces, measures retention in the chute, and verifies that the burrs sit in alignment. Fresh burrs can still grind badly when one carrier is not seated squarely. Misalignment creates a bimodal particle distribution and channeling that can be misread as a coffee or barista problem.
Burr replacement is therefore a calibration job. The physical swap is only the beginning. The carrier, screws, adjustment reference, and grind setting have to return to a repeatable position, then the grinder has to be tested with the bar’s coffee.
Motor not starting or stalling mid-grind
If the motor hesitates at startup or stalls during a dose, start with the grind setting and chute. Extremely fine coffee, clumping, or a packed exit path can overload a motor that is otherwise healthy. Coarsening the setting slightly and testing only after the path is clear is the reasonable operator check.
If that does not explain the symptom, the electrical and motor possibilities include a failing start capacitor, worn motor brushes on applicable brushed-motor models, or a blocked chute creating back-pressure. The Mythos Two uses a brushless motor, so it does not have brush wear, but the electronics that drive that motor can still fail.
The technician checks capacitor condition, brush length and contact where relevant, motor amperage at startup, shaft load, and the exit path. Motor and electrical diagnosis involves mains voltage. Do not remove covers because the grinder made one bad sound.
Mythos Two gravimetric dosing
The Mythos Two doses by weight through a load cell in the portafilter mount area. Coffee dust and fine grounds around the load cell are the first things to check when a set weight becomes erratic. The sensor is sensitive to contamination and to anything that changes the mechanical contact around the mount.
Calibration also changes when the portafilter changes. A heavier aftermarket portafilter or a different basket can alter the tare. If someone recently changed hardware or dropped a portafilter into the mount, clean the area and recalibrate with the manual procedure before assuming the load cell has failed.
If the dose remains unstable after cleaning and calibration, the technician tests the load cell, wiring, and display board. A board replacement should follow those measurements, not precede them.
Dead machine, no display
Total power failure usually begins with the power supply path, main fuse, or power board. Confirm that the outlet and external switch are working. On most MDX versions, a fuse in the base is accessible without tools. That is a reasonable boundary check. If the fuse is intact and the machine remains dead, stop there.
On the Mythos, the display and control boards are separate. A dead display while the grinder otherwise runs can point to the display board or the ribbon cable connection. A dead grinder with no display requires a broader power and control check. Both paths become mains-voltage work beyond the external observation.
Do not install a larger fuse to keep production moving. The fuse rating is part of the machine’s protection, and a new fuse that opens again is information about the fault.
Grind adjustment drift
If shots creep faster through a shift without anyone touching the setting, the adjustment mechanism may be worn. The Mythos collar system and the MDX stepped adjustment can both develop wear that lets vibration move the reference or leaves the carrier hard to position.
Fixing drift means accessing the upper burr housing and restoring the relationship between the adjustment mechanism and the burrs. If the reassembly changes alignment, the grinder now has both an adjustment problem and a burr problem. Record the setting mark, the time drift appeared, and whether the collar feels loose or stiff. That is more useful than turning it randomly until the shot looks better.

When to call
Grinder faults compound. Wrong burr alignment, an incorrect capacitor, or repeated motor stalls can turn a manageable repair into a damaged motor or a grinder that cannot be calibrated. If the machine is holding up the bar, stop experimenting after the accessible checks.
For the commercial coffee machine repair service, bring the model, burr type if known, roast profile, recent calibration changes, and whether the failure happened hot or cold.
The goal is not to replace parts because a display is dark or a shot is fast. It is to identify whether the grinder needs cleaning, alignment, a burr set, a capacitor, a brush or motor repair, a load-cell service, a fuse or board diagnosis, and then verify the grind before it returns to production.
