The Nuova Simonelli Aurelia is built for a busy bar, but it still gives recognizable warnings when its water, heat, and control systems drift. The right response depends on whether the problem developed slowly, affects one group, follows water work, or appears as a sudden pressure or temperature change.
The Aurelia family includes different configurations. The Aurelia Wave can use independent brew boilers per group head and a separate steam boiler. The Aurelia II has its own display alarms and volumetric behavior. Read the model and group number before ordering a part. The symptom is the start of diagnosis, not a universal parts list.

No steam or weak steam pressure
Scale buildup in the boiler or steam wands is the leading cause of a gradual pressure drop. The Aurelia’s boiler is sized for high-volume work, so a cafe may get weeks of warning before the steam becomes unusable. A slow decline over several weeks points toward scale and reduced capacity.
A sudden pressure drop is different. It can come from a pressure stat that has gone out of range, a solenoid that is partly stuck closed, a heating element that is not maintaining the boiler, or a leak in the steam circuit. Check the pressure gauge without opening the machine. If pressure is low or unstable, do not keep asking the wand to perform through the fault.
Scale can also collect in the wand tip or valve. Clean the accessible tip and document when the filter or softener was last serviced. Descaling a commercial boiler is a controlled acid-wash process, not merely dropping a tablet into the brew group. The technician protects seals and pressure components while removing the actual mineral load.
One group is slow or not dispensing
Flow problems limited to one group usually begin in that group’s path. Coffee oils and fine grounds restrict the shower screen and flow restrictor. On volumetric Aurelia Wave and Aurelia II configurations, a failing flowmeter can also disrupt dose measurement or stop the expected flow. A solenoid for that group can stick open or closed.
Start with a blind-filter backflush and detergent on the normal cleaning schedule. Pull and clean the shower screen and basket. If the group still flows slowly or stops, do not assume the main pump is dead. A pump fault usually affects more than one group. The technician isolates the group path, checks the flowmeter counter on volumetric models, and tests the solenoid.
Temperature problems
The Aurelia uses PID-controlled heating. A probe that drifts or fails can make the boiler chase a false setpoint. The machine may run too cool, too hot, or swing between the two. Sometimes an error appears on the display. Sometimes the only evidence is a change in the shot and a temperature that does not match the service-menu reading.
The Aurelia Wave’s multi-boiler arrangement makes the group number important. Each group brew boiler and the separate steam boiler have their own monitored conditions. A fault on one does not automatically mean every boiler needs work. The technician compares sensor readings in the technician service menu with a temperature measurement at the boiler or group and checks probe connections before replacing a control board.
Water treatment matters here as well. Scale changes heat transfer and can restrict a path while the PID still reports a plausible number. The water history, filter condition, and the difference between first-shot and under-load behavior all belong in the diagnostic record.
Leaks at the group or underneath
Group-head gaskets wear fast on a high-volume machine. If water appears during extraction around the portafilter, the gasket or group seat is a likely start. A leak underneath, near a boiler fitting, plumbing union, or expansion valve, is a different problem. Water can travel along the frame, so the puddle is not the source.
A technician dries the visible fittings, pressurizes the system under controlled conditions, and watches where moisture returns first. Fittings and expansion valves are easy to miss if someone only looks at the group collar. A small leak left for a week can wet a connector, corrode a board, or become a larger hot-water event.
Do not replace a gasket without first deciding whether the water appears during a shot or while the machine is idle. That timing separates the group seal from a solenoid or boiler-side leak.
Pump noise or a pump that runs constantly
A loud rattling vibration pump often points to a worn pump, cavitation, or an inlet problem. A pump that runs constantly even when no group is dispensing points more toward a pressure switch, flowmeter, leak, or control fault. The technician uses a group pressure gauge and observes the pump under a known load before choosing a part.
On a volumetric machine, the flowmeter can make the control system wait for a pulse that never arrives. A pressure or pump symptom can therefore be a measurement problem. Swapping the pump first can leave the original behavior intact.
What service actually involves
A sound Aurelia diagnosis starts with the error history and service-menu readings, then physical measurements:
- Review the alarm history, model, group number, and timing of the complaint.
- Check group pressure with a gauge and compare it with the expected extraction condition.
- Compare boiler and group temperature readings with an independent reference.
- Inspect group gaskets, screens, flow restrictors, and solenoids, using a multimeter before physically pulling a valve when the reading is abnormal.
- Check the flowmeter on volumetric models by cycling the group and watching the counter.
- Inspect boiler TDS, scale, water treatment, pressure stat, heating element, and fittings when the symptom points there.
The control board is usually the last component to replace. It is expensive and often receives blame for a mechanical fault. Connectors, probes, valves, pump output, and scale should be measured first.
What staff can handle
Backflushing with a blind filter and detergent, pulling and cleaning shower screens, cleaning baskets, checking a softener or inline filter on schedule, and documenting gauge behavior are reasonable cafe tasks. They keep the machine stable between service visits.
Group gasket replacement, solenoid work, boiler access, PID calibration, pump work, OPV or pressure adjustments, and electrical diagnosis need a trained technician. The Aurelia operates with hot, pressurized water and several dependent control systems. A wrong torque, incomplete depressurization, or reused screen can create a second fault.

When to stop running
Stop trying to work around the machine when pressure is unstable, temperature swings continue, a group leaks more than a drop or two after extraction, a fault will not clear after the correct cleaning cycle and one power cycle, or water is coming from an unknown internal source. High-volume equipment tends to fail harder when pushed through a symptom.
For a busy cafe, a full preventive service once or twice a year is a sensible baseline, alongside daily backflushing and regular screen cleaning. The calendar is only a baseline. The shot count, water condition, and the first change in behavior should move the service earlier.
