Miele G Series Dishwasher Fault Codes: What They Mean and What Fails

Miele G Series dishwashers show a specific fault code instead of one generic light, but the code only points to a system, not a part. Here's what drain, intake, and heater faults actually mean, and why we confirm the real failure with a multimeter before replacing anything.

Miele’s G Series dishwashers are built to run quiet for years, and when something goes wrong, the display reports a specific fault instead of one generic blinking light like most brands. That’s useful only if you read it right. A fault code narrows down which circuit failed. It doesn’t tell you which part is bad, and it definitely doesn’t mean the control board needs replacing. We see that guess made a lot, and it’s usually wrong.

What the Fault Code Is Actually Pointing To

Miele groups its faults into a handful of systems: drain, water intake and fill, and heating. Each one tells the board that an expected condition didn’t happen in time, whether that’s water draining fast enough, filling to the right level, or reaching the right temperature. The code is a symptom report, not a parts list. Our job is to test the circuit it points to before deciding what’s failed.

Drain Faults: Check the Pump and the Path First

A drain fault (Miele labels this F11) means the machine didn’t see the sump clear in the time it expects. Two things cause that almost every time: a failing drain pump or a clogged path between the sump and the drain line.

The pump fails a few ways: the impeller jams on glass or debris, the motor winding opens and it won’t run, or the bearings wear out and it runs weak. A multimeter across the windings tells us fast whether it’s electrical.

The clogged path is more common than a bad pump. Food debris, labels, and broken glass collect in the filter assembly and sump strainer until flow drops enough to trip the fault with a good pump still installed. We pull the filter and check the sump before ordering one.

What we don’t do is replace the control board because the display shows a drain fault. The board is only reporting what a pressure switch or flow sensor told it. It’s rarely the part that actually failed.

Intake and Fill Faults: Valve or Line, Not Electronics

Intake and fill faults (F12 and F13) mean the machine didn’t reach its target fill level or flow rate in time. The two usual suspects are the inlet water valve and the supply line feeding it.

The inlet valve is a solenoid. Send it power and it should open. If the coil has failed, a multimeter across it shows an open circuit or a resistance reading well off spec. Mineral buildup can also hold the valve partly shut even when the coil tests fine, so we check both sides.

The supply line is the other half of it. A kinked line behind the unit, a half-closed shutoff valve under the sink, or a clogged inlet screen can choke flow enough to trip a fill fault with no part defective. We check line pressure and look for kinks before we ever touch the valve.

Here too, the fix is rarely inside the control board. It’s a valve that needs to open on command, or a line that needs to deliver water.

Heater Faults: The Flow-Through Heater

The G Series uses a flow-through heater. Water passes through an inline heating element as it circulates, instead of sitting over an exposed element in the tub like older machines. A heater fault (F51) usually means the water isn’t reaching temperature in the expected window, or a safety cutout tripped.

That can be the heater element failing open, a temperature sensor reading incorrectly, or restricted flow through the housing that keeps water from moving past the element fast enough. We test the heater for continuity and correct resistance, and check the sensor against a known good value before assuming either one is bad.

A flow restriction can mimic a bad heater. If water isn’t moving through the housing the way it should, the machine sees the same symptom as a dead element, and swapping the heater won’t fix a blockage.

Why We Test Before We Order Parts

Every fault covered here narrows the problem down to a system, not a component. That’s why we read the code off the display and confirm the actual failure with a multimeter, checking resistance, continuity, and voltage on the part it points to, instead of guessing which part looks likely.
