When a Mazzer stops grinding, the first question is not “which part should I order?” It is what the motor is doing and what, if anything, is leaving the grinder. A Major, Mini, or Robur can sound alive while the burr chamber is packed, or it can be electrically quiet because a thermal protector has opened. Those are very different repairs.
Write down the model, whether it is an electronic version, what the motor sounds like, and whether the failure happened suddenly or developed over several shifts. A sharp crack before the stop suggests a foreign object. A quiet machine after a hot shift suggests thermal protection or an electrical fault. A grinder that still runs but produces no coffee points first to the burr chamber and chute.

The matrix is useful because it keeps a mechanical blockage from being mistaken for a board failure. It also tells the technician what happened before the grinder was repeatedly forced.
Motor runs but nothing comes out
This is the common “the grinder sounds normal, but the cup is empty” call. Nine times out of ten, the burrs are jammed by a foreign object, compacted stale coffee, or a chunk of over-roasted oily beans that fused into the gap. Oily coffee can glaze the burr faces without creating one dramatic obstruction. The motor then turns while the grind path stays closed.
Without tools, check around the hopper area for something plainly visible. Do not reach into a moving burr set. On a Major, Mini, or Robur, proper inspection means removing the burr carrier, cleaning the chamber, checking the exit path, and examining the burr surfaces for glazing, chips, or rounding. If the motor sounds labored after the obvious check, stop running it. The load can damage the motor even if the original problem was only coffee.
The technician also restores alignment. The burr carrier and adjustment collar are not independent parts. A grinder that is cleaned and reassembled with the carrier sitting differently can produce a new calibration problem, uneven particle size, and faster burr wear.
Motor will not start or only hums
If pressing the switch does nothing, first confirm the external power source and the machine switch. If there is a brief hum and the motor cuts off, the run capacitor is a leading suspect. Mazzer grinders use a run capacitor on the single-phase motor. After years of high-volume service, a weak capacitor may no longer provide the torque needed to start the burrs.
The wrong capacitor is not a harmless substitution. The microfarad rating and voltage have to match the motor requirements. Capacitors can retain a charge after the grinder is unplugged, so replacement is electrical work, not a hopper-side adjustment. On the Robur and Robur Electronic, motor access is also tight. A technician checks the capacitor, motor current, shaft movement, and wiring while the housing is open instead of replacing the capacitor on a guess.
Before service, record whether the hum occurs with beans removed and whether the failure follows a jam. Do not keep hitting the switch. Stall-cycling a motor under load turns a burr problem into a winding or capacitor problem.
Grinding stops mid-shift and recovers overnight
That pattern is classic thermal overload. The motor overheats, the thermal protector trips, and the grinder works again after it cools. It may appear healthy when someone tests it the next morning, which is why the timing matters.
One operator check is the housing ventilation. Coffee dust packed into the slots reduces cooling. Clear the external vents without pushing debris into the motor. Some Mazzer motors also have an external reset button on the motor housing. If the protector has tripped and the button is accessible, the grinder may not restart until it is pressed.
If the shutdown returns after the vents are clean, do not call it normal heat. A failing capacitor makes the motor work harder, and worn bearings add mechanical load. The technician measures current and checks the protector, capacitor, bearings, and burr load. The goal is to find why the protector is being asked to save the motor.
Grind setting slipped or the collar will not move
On older Mazzers, the adjustment collar and its locking pin wear with use. Vibration can move the collar so the grind becomes progressively finer during a shift. In another machine the collar will not turn because oil and grounds have packed into the threads or adjustment mechanism.
The correction is not simply “turn it back.” The collar position relates to the burr carrier and calibration marks. After disassembly, the carrier has to return squarely, the burrs have to sit in alignment, and the grinder has to be calibrated. If the relationship is off, extraction quality drops, the particle distribution becomes inconsistent, and the burrs can contact or wear unevenly.
Note how far the setting moved and whether the change happened while the grinder was running. That evidence helps distinguish a worn locking mechanism from a cleaning or reassembly problem.
Electronic models dose or count incorrectly
On the Major Electronic and Robur Electronic, a dose problem often begins with the doser micro-switch. It is a wear part that sees repeated cycles. The timer PCB is another possibility, but the board is not the first thing to blame.
Check that the doser compartment clears cleanly and that grounds are not packing above the exit chute. A mechanical restriction can prevent the switch from seeing the expected movement and can make an electronic grinder appear to have a software fault. If the path is clear, the technician tests the micro-switch, wiring, and timer PCB.
What the technician inspects
The service sequence is deliberate. I begin with the failure pattern, then isolate the mechanical load from the electrical start circuit. For a jam, I inspect the burr carrier, chamber, chute, foreign-object damage, glazed surfaces, and burr alignment. For a start fault, I check the run capacitor, wiring, motor current, and shaft. For thermal shutdown, I check ventilation, bearings, capacitor load, and the protector. For an electronic dose issue, I test the micro-switch before the timer PCB.
That approach matters on a commercial grinder because burr alignment is part of the repair. A machine can turn on after service and still be wrong for the bar if the carrier or collar was reassembled without calibration.

When to stop troubleshooting
Stop if the grinder will not run reliably, if a burr needs to be pulled, if thermal shutdowns keep returning, or if the motor makes a new grinding, rattling, or electrical sound. Do not guess at a capacitor specification, wedge metal into the burr gap, or keep running a grinder with a slipping collar.
Mazzer Major, Mini, and Robur grinders are serviceable machines, but the repair is not complete until the burr condition, alignment, and calibration are confirmed. A proper diagnosis protects the motor and the grind quality at the same time.
