Water pooling under an espresso machine is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The puddle may be six inches away from the first wet fitting because water runs along the frame and floor. The useful questions are when the leak happens, what part of the machine is first wet, and whether the system is idle or under brew pressure.
Dry the surface before testing. Then run only a short, controlled cycle, and only if the machine is otherwise safe and there’s no sign of a boiler or electrical leak. Watch from the side. Keep your hands away from hot, pressurized plumbing.

Group-head gasket
The gasket is the rubber ring that seals the portafilter against the group head during extraction. Heat, pressure, cleaning chemicals, and repeated locking compress and harden it. When the seal loses elasticity, water escapes around the outside edge of the portafilter collar.
The usual pattern is a slow drip or spray only while a shot is running. The puddle may end up on the drip-tray side of the machine rather than directly below the group. A portafilter that locks with much less resistance or rotates farther than it used to is another clue.
A minor gasket leak can sometimes be monitored through a short shift while service is arranged, but only when the source is certain and the flow stays minor. A gasket can tear farther under pressure. If the water is hot, the spray is growing, or you are not sure it is the gasket, stop using the machine.
Three-way solenoid valve
The three-way solenoid sends water to the group and depressurizes the portafilter after the shot. When its seat wears or scale prevents it from sealing, the valve can weep while the machine is idle. This leak often appears underneath or slightly behind the group and may be intermittent.
The timing is useful. A drip that continues when no shot is running points away from a simple portafilter seal. Mineral scale is a common cause, especially in hard-water areas or on a machine with an overdue service. Coffee oils and debris can also keep the valve from closing cleanly.
Solenoid service means opening the hydraulic circuit, checking the coil and valve, and safely handling residual pressure. Do not assume a new group gasket will fix a leak that continues between shots.
Boiler fittings, hose connections, pump, and inlet valve
Boiler fittings and hose connections are less common as the first visible complaint but more serious. Thermal cycling, vibration, a tired seal, or a connection that was never seated correctly can create a slow weep. Look for white mineral deposits, staining on the internal frame, or moisture that returns with the machine heating even when no drink is being made.
Other sources include pump fittings, the steam-wand connection, the water inlet solenoid, and an expansion-valve path. A thorough diagnosis rules those out in sequence instead of replacing the visible gasket first.
A boiler fitting that leaks under operating pressure can fail more suddenly under thermal stress. Commercial boilers hold hot water and steam at temperatures and pressures that can burn a person or wet electrical components. Pull the machine from service. Do not tighten a hot fitting or open a panel while the system is pressurized.
How a technician finds the first wet point
We start by wiping every visible fitting dry, then run a short test cycle and watch which connection goes wet first, and whether it leaks only under brew pressure or keeps dripping after.
Scale is the next question. Water hardness varies by city, and the failure pattern varies with it: harder water pushes more solenoid and boiler problems, while softer-water shops tend to show gasket wear first. Water treatment changes which part gives out, not the need to find the source.
If nothing shows, the panels come off and we check fittings under controlled pressure. That takes the correct pressure specifications and a safe way to depressurize. It’s not a good place to improvise with a wrench and a towel.
Safe checks before calling
Note whether the drip happens only during extraction or continues while idle. That single observation narrows the list. Check whether the drip tray is simply overfilling. A tray that is not emptied or a drain that is restricted can look like a floor leak.
Do not remove the boiler, service a solenoid, or loosen a pressurized fitting. Even a group gasket deserves care on a commercial machine because the correct gasket, seating depth, shower screen, and group condition all affect the result. A replacement that does not stop the leak is evidence that the group seat or another valve also needs inspection.
For the commercial coffee machine repair service, bring a photo of the puddle, the timing of the drip, the machine model, and whether the water is clear, coffee-colored, or leaving mineral residue.
When to pull the machine
Pull it immediately when the leak is from a boiler fitting, pressurized hose, or unknown internal source. A confirmed minor gasket leak can wait for the service call, but don’t leave it unattended or push through a worsening spray.
Running a leaking machine without knowing the source is how a small seal turns into a damaged valve, wet control board, or unsafe hot-water event. The first wet point matters more than the size of the puddle.
